    Hey,

    I can't automatically download AVG updates etc. when I'm in college (ucd), and I think it's probably the proxy server thing (sorry, n00b and all that:o ).

    Does anybody know how to configure the settings to make it work?

    Thanks:)

    The proxy setting you need is proxy1.ucd.ie and port 8484. I don't have AVG in front of me so I can't tell you exactly where to enter these. But if you look in the update manager properties/settings there should be a section to configure how it connects with fields for proxy etc.

    Update: From google
    * run AVG Control Center (by double-clicking the AVG icon in systray)
    * right-click the Update Manager component and choose the Settings option
    * press the Proxy tab
    * enter correct proxy server (DNS name or IP address) and port number (you can get this information from your network administrator). If the proxy server requires the authentication, enter correctly also username and password

    No and don't go asking how, you'll get banned.

    Right, well then in that case, does anyone know how to get apple mail to work on the ucd network. Actually being serious here, bloody annoying having to use web mail every time i want to check my email

    If you mean you're trying to use a mail client like outlook/thunderbird/etc to access a pop3 account then you can't. POP3 requires port 110 to be open on the firewall and it isn't on the UCD firewall. So you're stuck with webmail for any non ucd mail accounts.

    No.

    The client should be set either to "auto detect" proxy settings or, only if unable to use automatic setup, to proxy.ucd.ie port 8484 or port 8585. Do not hardcode any of the proxyX names, as these are subject to change without warning, but proxy.ucd.ie will always be there and it'll give you one of the 8 proxies we have, not just a single one, which may occasionally be taken out of service for maintenance.

    Well 1st off, isn't some sort of IT support in UCD?
    FAQ, WIKI, IT HELPDESK, you know this type of thing.

    And my second point is that this type of Proxy Server information should be set using DHCP/DNS...
