Tall Golfer - Longer Clubs

    Hey,

I have a set of second hand. Titleist DCI golf clubs. I was advised to get longer clubs because I'm tall (6'4"). I thought the Titleist were inch longer clubs. However when I went to a demo day the Cobra inch longer clubs were longer than my Titleist clubs.

What I really want to know is do tall golfers need longer clubs or is it just a way of getting you to spend more money on clubs.

The demo man was talking about the lie of the club and the length. Am I making life difficult for myself by not getting a good set up?

    Thanks

    L

Its not just height but also length of arms, etc. However I am the same height and I have clubs that are 1" extended and 1degree upright (lie).

It does make a big difference. I find using standard length clubs almost impossible now.

The likes of McGuirks are very good in this area and can now order you most manufacturers clubs for virtually the same cost as standard clubs.

If you want to be sure and plan to spend a fair bit of cash then I would recommended having your swing analysed and getting the professional advice associated.

    Best of luck

Its usually a way to get you to spend more money on clubs. I am just over 6 foot and the clubs I was fitted for are actually shorter than standard.
The measurement that dictates how long of club you need is the distance from your wrist bone to the floor. so you could be 5 foot nothing with short arms and need inch longer clubs.
There are also a number of other factors, go for a dynamic fitting which would determine the length you need.

    There's a big difference between 6' and 6' 4" Davkie!!!

But OP as Davkie says it really does depend on the individual. However the fact is the majority of people who are 6'4" will need an extension of some sort. I'm also 6'4" and mine are 3/4 of an inch longer and 1deg upright. As Kenco said, if you get longer clubs it will probably affect the lie that you require.

Your best bet would be to get a custom fitting somewhere, as there's no real way of knowing without getting someone to measure your swing.

I'm also 6ft 4 and funnily enough had DCIs a few years back that were a half inch longer. Basically I had them fitted with shafts from the next iron up - 5 iron shaft in 6 iron etc.

To be honest, I never really got comfortable with the added length and my game suffered. I was a decent journeyman playing U21s at the time so I figured I could just about justify forking out to be fitted down in Rathsallagh where I was having lessons at the time.

I got a brand new set of Ping i3 blades, 2 degs upright, standard length with dynamic gold x100s and haven't thought about changing since.

My advice to you would be ask yourself if you actually feel uncomfortable with standard clubs or if you're just thinking about getting longer ones cos you hear that's what you should have. In my own experience, I'm surprised at the amount of good players around our own height that don't have longer clubs...

    Hope this helps

6ft 4" and use 1" longer Taylor Mades, standard lie, makes a huge difference

    especially with the mid-short irons

get fitted, should cost much more

I think you should go back and read my original post , my point was that height is not the determining factor in club length.

I'll look into the custom fitting. The clubs at the demo did feel good. A lot better than my own clubs.

    Thanks for the advice.

Not all golf clubs are the same lenght the general measurement for the length of clubs needed is taken by your wrist to floor measurement my advice to you is go to a golf shop like golf works dont go in with your clubs go in without clubs and ask them to measure or custom fit you.
When you have your results from them and only then mention that you have a set and then bring them in from the car.

Your clubs can be altered but you not need any changes at all.

Let us know how you get on.

At Portmarnock Driving Range there's a fitting centre. Guy there works kinda in association with Golfworks. I quizzed him there about the length & lie angle & whether it was worth getting a fitting.
He stuck a magnetic pointer onto the face of a club which pointed directly at the target when the sole was lying flat. As tilted the club back & forth slightly to change the lie, the pointer moved about 10 degrees left & right of the target. When the lie was too upright it pointed right, too flat it pointed left.
I'm about 6ft but he measured the distance from my wrist to the ground and said my arms were quite far from the ground so I might need a more upright lie or a longer shaft.
There were a selection of clubs there (Ping & Mizuno) with various lies & lengths. A Mizuno MX23 with 2deg upright face was very easy to hit & went very straight for me.
He said he could either do a Ping or Mizuno fitting and order the clubs. I forget what price he said. He could also just do a fit for 40(?) euro.
He recommended going to the pro to get your swing sortd out first. No point in getting clubs fitted for a crappy swing and then changing it all later :D
