    All,

Just starting out golfing. Played only twice.

Can anyone recommend a club in and around Navan? Navan Golf Club are opening membership in January, anyone played here?

Another question? anyone get lessons around this area/? again looking for recommendation. (I know Navan GC have 2 Pros who give lessons for €30 per 1/2 hour.)

Also I pass by Moor Park Golf Club (near Navan on Kentstown Rd) every day on the way to work. Anyone a member here or played recently?

    Any info gratefully accepted.

The only ones i've played in that general direction are Headfort (kells), Ashbourne, Royal Tara, The Glebe (Trim), Knightbrook (Trim).

    Hi joxer,

I'm living in Navan and play around here all the time. I only started playing start of this year and I found Moor Park handy enough to build up my confidence. It's not a great course but you can build up your confidence before hitting the better clubs. Cost out there is €25 for 18, €13 for 9. No need to be a member or be with one or even book a tee time, just turn up and play. The course isn't great compared to the others around but it will get you started. Membership seems to be open out there but I wouldn't recommend it.

Then there's Navan Golf Club. That's a nice course. 2 different styles - front (very open) and back (mature parkland). The greens out there are very nice and tricky too. As you mentioned, they've 2 pros - usee (that's finetically spelt) and paul. Paul seems to be around more but you need to book him in advance and best time to get him is during the day. I think a round is about €30 for 18 and €18 for 9. Avoid Thursdays and ring at the weekend for a tee time. No need to have a member with you. Membership is 3k out there.

Royal Tara is just out the Dublin road a bit. Best way to get to it is to head down the Dublin road and turn right at the old bridge in. Follow that road to a crossroad - go through the crossroad and they are at the top of the hill on the right. That's a 27 hole mature course. It's 101 years old. I love this course myself and play it regularly. John is the pro out there but I don't know if he does lessons. Never saw any notice about it but he may do. €45 for 18 on the blue and red, and €15 for 9 on the yellow. You can usually get a round out there no problem as they have 27 holes (even if it's the yellow course twice) but just ring the pro shop to check first. No need to have a member. Membership in Tara is about 10k and they are open for membership I think.

Further afield is Headfort - Old and New. I've only played the old course out there, which is lovely. I hear the new course is quite difficult but a joy to play with lots of water to navigate. I hear membership is around 10k-15k here. A round is €55 on the old and €80 on the new. No need for member but ring for a tee time.

Knightsbrook is over in Trim, just on the Dublin road out of it. Haven't played it yet but it's supposed to be a lovely course. I was over there for a meeting one day and went out for a look and it does look great. I think a round is €90-€100 as far as I remember. They are open for membership, which started at 10k but I know believe it's up at €20k.

I hope that helps but if you're looking for someone to go out for a round sometime or any other questions, feel free to ask.

    Rgds, Dave

    Hi,

There are a load of courses within a few miles - Moorpark isn't bad for us starters - it's never that busy and is reasonable value.
Navan is a nice course - I find it hard to get out without being with a member.
The Glebe is another one that is getting better - I played it in May and I was impressed with some of the changes they made since last year. It is reasonably priced as well.
Black Bush in Dunshaughlin isn't bad either. Another one I play occassionally is R&R (just outside Dunboyne on the Maynooth road) - Reasonable course for the money (20 E for 18 i think!)
If your ever interested in going out for a few holes let me know - I'm also a beginner!

Sure we'll all meet up :D

Does boards have an outing by any chance? If not, we should organise one?

Slumped tried to get one going earlier this year, but there was very little response (i think only 3 or 4 people) so it didn't go ahead.

I think the main sticking point was that whoever booked it would have to pay fees up front and with people on here generally being strangers to each other it was a big risk.

Possibly could try it again... paypal could be an option?!

    great info lads - thanks

Moor Park sounds like the place to start.

I would be interested in getting out as I have only played twice with brother in law - he can only do Sunday mornings which were busy & being a beginner I found the pressure of other people waiting at the tees a bit much. The course was very busy and not very forgiving (South County). We let the people behind us play through as they were better but there was still others behind them.

I was up at the driving range last night in navan and hit about 60% of the balls straight but on the course it was more like 20%. Pressure!!

I only have a lend of a set of clubs from a mate - so need to pick up a set. Beginners budget aswell. Nevada Bobs in Rathgar have a full set with oversized heads for about €190 might go for those. You guys have any tips on getting clubs? are there any decent spot around Navan to buy clubs?
Am watching adverts.ie and ebay and poping in and out of shops to try various clubs. Liking the expensive cobras the best but out of my league at the moment.

    Cheers

    Joxer

How about trying the buy and sell - I picked up a set from a guy for 150 euros and they were the perfect set to start with - have since bought a new set of King Cobras and they are the business - it's amazing the difference a good set can do for your game.

BTW - I love to play early Saturday mornings if anyone is interested - Just PM me and maybe we can arrange something locally.

For a golf lesson try Bredan Mcgovern out in Headfort i think he is still there i got a lesson from him once nice guy but did not put me on camera.
I am just one of those people who has to see my swing to understand whats wrong. Maybe Brendan has moved on with the times and is now using a camera.

I am getting a lesson myself in portmarnock driving range tonight so best of luck to you.

Are you getting the lesson from Barry Power ? Portmarnock is my local range so interested to see how you get on! Need to get a lesson myself.

Had a lesson last night with Yussi in Navan. It was good, he noted that I was trying to kill the ball and that with half the effort and a bit of rhythm I could hit the ball just as far if not further.

Also has set me on the road to swinging properly making sure that my left shoulder is behind the ball on the back swing and right shoulder is in front of where the ball was on the follow through. This improved my accuracy but I'll need to practice, also told me to stand closer to the ball.

Am going back for another next week - he told me that it's pnly €13 euros up there for 9 holes after 6pm, might have a go next week for the craic.

Yes it was Barry Power extremely pleased with the lesson he put me on camera i am just one of those people that has to see my swing on camera he placed the lesson on dvd for which i have to say makes all the difference to me being able to look back over my lesson and listen to what he said.
I have had many a golf lesson from numerous golf pros including Brendan Mcdaid and i have to say i think barry is very very good. He has a great website dak its called http://www.bpga.ie
loads of free video golf tips. Have a look and if you get a lesson from him fill me in on what he wants you to work on. I might learn something. Good luck

Hi all. am local to Portmarnock myself. have taken a lesson with Barry Power - found him very good. The lesson was very useful and he had it setup with video camera and computer so he could burn a recording of your swing along with corrective instruction from him to DVD - great if you are like me and struggle to remember every tidbit of advice a week after the event.

Just back from having my lesson with Barry Power. Got some useful tips , now just have to get a grip! The instruction and playback during the lesson is very useful . I was surprised how far the ball actually travels when you hit it after a slow backswing . Very energy efficient when hit correctly. Would definately recomend Barry as a pro worth getting a lesson from!

Here here, got a lesson from Barry myself last week and in 5 mins my slice was just about gone from just makin a grip change. Slicers unite All hail Barry.....

Na seriously got great advice from Barry and when you can see the lesson played back on the dvd it makes a world of difference, even better when you can view it at home too.
