I'm installing a second sata hard drive in my computer, its connected fine but when I boot up the machine hangs on 'detecting ide drives'.

Any ideas? Googling brings up nothing but problems relating to actual IDE drives, but these are both sata

You don't have RAID turned on the BIOS for the ports it's on, do you?

What motherboard do you have and what chipset is on the motherboard , is the new drive a SATA II drive.

There is an issue with some chipsets and sata 2 drives that will stop a computer booting ( as one of the symptoms). it is tied to specific chipsets though so it does depend on your motherboard.

You can put a jumper on the SATA drive to limit its speed , which may fix the problem.
