Hi, looking for a recomendation of a hotel in LA, hoping to get there later this year. Have heard a lot of dodgy stories about bad areas of LA, so defo want to do my homework before i book something. The cheaper the better, prob wont be in the hotel much, and a good location is a must!
Also and tips/hints/reviews about LA would be much appreciated!!

you will probably end up in Hollywood or in the Westwood area. As the previous poster has said LA is huge and makes Dublin's spawl look like a few houses in comparision.

Parts of downtown and east hollywood even as late as a few years ago were very bad (especially after dark). Even though downtown has cleaned up its act somewhat, i still wouldn't recommend staying there (its too far from most of the major sights for one).

I stayed at the Hollywood Orchid Suites in January http://www.orchidsuites.com/ there was 6 of us and we got the apartment for about $180 a night (they also do single rooms). Its in a fantastic location right behind the Kodak threatre (which is home to the Oscar ceremonies).

I also stayed here a few years ago http://www.bevonshire.com/ its about 1 mile from Hollywood and close to melrose place. its cheaper than the Orchid suites, but the Orchid wins for location.

Don't miss Universal Studios while you are in LA, best attraction in town by a fair distance imo.

I was in LA in June, if you're willing to try a hostel.

We stayed in a really nice hostel just off the Chinese Theater.
It was nice & clean & good mixed of people staying there.
