Anyone know the best place to get toughened glass to protect new wooden kitchen table and is it expensive?

    I'm in Waterford.

    TIA

You will have to go to a glass & mirror shop and order one made to measure. It will be made of toughened glass and can be bevel edged or rounded. You can even have the underside sandblasted with a favoured design, It aint cheap but it will look good and protect any table.

What size is it? Is it shaped? What thickness do you want the glass? All needed for a rough price?

It's rectangular, 39" wide x 68" long with centre folded underneath. I don't plan on extending it to full length too often.

I suppose average thickness, not sure of the difference

For a piece that size in 6mm toughened with all edges polished your talking 190 euro. This is a supply only price so doesnt include someone coming out to measure it or delivery. Rounded corners would be extra too.

Sorry I didnt reply earlier I wanted to check my table size , for a table 1.2m x 1.6m I paid €300 for the 8mm toughened glass which had to be ordered in from Dublin via O'Driscolls in Waterford .

    try http://www.newontop.com/

they'll cut a piece of clear thick PVC to fit your table - added advantage is that things don't break if they fall on it etc...

    They're based in Newtownmountkennedy too

Judging by the photos on their site I would not be in a hurry to buy their product , I have seen this used on many occasions on chart plotting tables and in my experience they discolour very fast and tend to look tatty after a while and thats without application of any hot or warm items ! They also tend to hold on to air pockets and can adhere to varnished surfaces which will then require some work !
But then again if you have kids the flexi pvc may be your best option , Then my toughened glass takes plenty of abuse and hasnt scratched yet in 3yrs !

Yeah, depends on your aims, many will have a dining room table that is kept well and has to look nice- glass. While the kitchen table is subject to daily abuse and looks may not be as important so the PVC could be acceptable, really just a thick plastic tablecloth.

I imagine the PVC will be ruined in no time, a mug on it will scratch it. Glass is a very hard substance- "hard" being an engineering term for scratch proof, while "tough" is an engineering term for fracture resistance. So your PVC is not hard, but tough. Toughened glass is still hard, as it is lying on a flat surface it will not fracture as easy, i.e. it cannot lever against anything, unless the table has undulations if it is a fold away one.
