    In the last 2 days the hard drive on my sky+ box has been making a scratching noise while recording and during playback of recordings;
    could this mean that the hard drive is failing?

    Sounds like it. Ring Sky very quickly. Is it a pace unit by any chance???
    All you should hear is the soft whirring of the fan, well most of the time soft whirring.

    could be the hd or the fan.
    Any strange or unusual sounds from your digibox are never welcome.
    If you can I'd recommend you save off anything you havent seen to DVD as they could all be lost if it does die.
    There have been reports in the past of unusually noisy fans caused by updates in the firmware causing fans to remain on continuously.

    She's on her way out.

    My 250GB Sky+ HD went like that for two weeks and then died.
