Which wooden floors?

I am looking to get about 60 sq yards of wooden floors. It is for a hall, sitting room and a playroom.

We have maple semi solid at the moment and they have become badly scratched and I am dissappointed with their lack of durability.

We are looking at solid oak for 30 a sq yard.

Any suggestions about some robust solution, with a nice look. Would expensive laminate be an option. I want something with a solid look.

If you can get solid wooden flooring unfinished and have your fitter finish it with Rustins sealers it is far superior to the pre finished solid flooring. We bought unfinished flooring at the right price and then bought finished at two and three times the price (depending on the wood) and the unfinished oak (finished by our floorer) is FAR SUPERIOR and more hard wearing than the prefinished floor. We have one prefinished floor down a year and stratched to hell in the livingroom (toys dropping on it etc) but yet the playroom where most of the playing is done is perfect and it's covered by the unfinished oak. Spoke to another housebuilder about this and he's a builder too - he said in his previous house he had prefinished everywhere and the plastic type coating that they seem to put on the flooring wears really badly. He too is putting down unfinished timber in his current build. Mulveys of Ranelagh is where we got some unfinished flooring.

Expensive laminate is good for wear but its still that...laminate!
A different option could be an engineered (posh for semi-solid) plank floor with a 'bio tech' oiled finish. Its not oily but if you get damage in one spot it can be repaired without having to do the whole floor.
HARO make it (a german company) and Wogans of Dunleer distribute it.
Most flooring shops stock it.
