Parking

    Hi folks,

I just wanted to give a warning to all the new (and existing) students to NUIG.
Parking is highly restricted within the college campus with designated car parks for students with permits. (see http://www.nuigalway.ie/buildings/parking_students.html for maps etc)

This week and last week the clamper has been very noticeable in his absence and I would suspect he will be back with a bang and a flash of yellow next week. As a result I have noticed that many students are parking in what are staff only parking areas. Don't get complacent ;) he will clamp and charge you regardless of your excuse.

    Cheers,
    S

There should be an annual parking fee, this money should be used to build some proper parking, multistorey more than likely.

That, or Galway needs to get some proper public transport servicing the city and surrounding towns and villages (ie Corrib Light rail from Oranmore to Moycullen).

I was told by a certain member of one of the boards in the college, that a multi-storey car park is in the pipeline, it will be a couple of years yet but there will be one, and it is badly needed!

The clamper lads are dead sound, and I'm glad every one is getting clamped. More clamping I say!

Dont get me wrong, they are only doing their jobs, and its the peoples fault for where they park 99% of the time (id put the other 1% down to people who didnt know fully about the parking e.g newcomers).
In fact, one of the fellas told me to appeal about a clamping last year while taking the wheel brace off my car, telling me to let on that I didnt know I was parked illegally (to say I wasnt familiar with the college!!) and there would be a chance id get me money back!!

yeah there is a serious lack of signs around.
those yellow ones are pretty much useless as they are way too small and there aren't enough of them anyway

SIPTU would make any kind of fee a symbol of staff oppression. ;) The first problem before money becomes a factor is that the planning regulations imposed mean that the college are not allowed to add any extra parking spaces. Even the temporary car parks for building works aren't supposed to open until the original one closes.

I'm not too sure about this one. Aside from planning issues, multi storey car parks cost a lot to finance so I could see one being quite a costly facility, especially for students.

They are applying for planning permission for a carpark on the pitches in Dangan with a courtesy shuttlebus to the concourse

"Plans to turn soccer pitches into a park and ride facility are likely to meet with opposition from residents and sports groups.
NUI Galway proposes to set up a carpark for 500 vehicles near Corrib Village and lay on a bus service to transport students and staff back and forth to the campus.
Local residents believed the park and ride site was contained within Corrib Village but have since learned after checking out plans in City Hall that three soccer pitches on the border of Dangan and Upper Newcastle, beside Dangan Nurseries, will be swallowed up by the project."

    - Sentinel, July 10th 2007

Planning application was submitted by NUIG 21/06/2007

"Permission for develoment consisting of a Park and Ride facility all within the NUIG Campus. The facility will consist of 500 No. car parking spaces together with a dedicated bus service, and the parking area will be accessed from the existing Corrib Village entrance on Upper Newcastle Road. The bus route will utilise existing internal routes within the campus area and will be 3.76km in length and will serve as a shuttle facility. The proposal will also include a carpark attendant building, bus shelters and all associated site development work and services."

There is not enough parking for students in NUI. The builders are using the gravel carpark which is making the parking situation even worse. They should not be allowed to do this, they should park on site or be accomodated in some other way. We need all the spaces we can get!
