Whne your connected to your VPN all of your traffic is rerouted through their system. This means your SMTP account information in Outlook will no longer work.

For example, if your on Eircom and your SMTP server is mail1.eircom.net and you connect to your VPN, you can no longer use the eircom SMTP server as you are now on another (virtual) network.

You need to do one of the following:

Edit your account information in Outlook (under tools). Note however that when you disconnect from the VPN, you will manually have to change your SMTP account information back to the original.

    OR

Get a POP3 account which allows you to send emails that requires a logon. That way no matter what network your connected to it will send the email regardless.

GMail does this, as may some others, but thats the first one I can think of thats free.

Interesting - I know of a chap who cant send emails when using wireless broadband - he has to be directly connected via cable. Never looked into it as hes always away on business, but thought it was rather odd.

As long as your SMTP server accepts authentication, it shouldn't matter where you are when you try to connect. mail1.eircom.net should be routable through the VPN tunnel. You can test this by connecting, open CMD and typing "telnet mail1.eircom.net 25".
As long as Outlook is checked to "My server requires Authentication" this shouldn't be a problem

Does the host you are sending to have reverse DNS setup correctly? This could be a problem.
