I have a stock DBoy M4 S-System which has a metal gear box... I am using the battery that came with it at the moment (8.4v 1500mah) would I need to do any upgrading to the stock parts for it to happily run with a 9.6v battery? Im generally happy with the gun but I would like to increase the RoF

aye, one of the issues with the dboys m4s is the rof, i just got the m4a1 last week, and after initially testing it on the 8.4v that came with it, i stuck in a 9.6v firefox battery that i had (it will actually fit in the handgrip btw, just needs a little convincing ;))
it works fine and such a small increase in the voltage shouldnt do any damage, however since you are firing faster, it is possible for your components to wear out sooner.

increasing the battery voltage is just one way (albeit probably the easiest) of increasing the rof, you can also lighten the piston, get hi-speed gears, a hi-speed motor, even re-shimming the gearbox can improve it if it's badly shimmed in the first place.

The reason I was looking at increasing voltage is that it is my main gun and I have never opened an AEG before (seen it done on you tube a few times now though). Dont want to screw up my main gun... as soon as I get a second AEG though I will strip down the whole thing to see how it works and maybe replace some of the internals...

Its good to know that the battery will fit... that was a big concern... do 9.6v batteries come with the small or large connector? Will I need an adaptor of some kind?

well, mine is the m4a1 version, so the grip on the s-system is slightly different, you might want to try one first.

9.6v come in both large and small type, youll want a 9.6v mini type battery (which will have a small connector)

so its safe to use a higher rated battery then, sure i read somewhere it wasn't advised with D boys, might be wrong

If it has plastic bushings I would not ust a 9.6. A 9.6 battery can break a bushing causing your gears to strip.

been running my p90 with a 1J spring and stock bushings on 9.6 for several months now and no trouble, also the dboys m4s have 7mm bushings in the gearbox which are stronger than normal 6mm bushings

the ssystem front end is wider then the normal front ends so it might fit without bother.
