What's an updated version of 256mb ATI Radeon x550? Is this a good graphics card by the way for gaming?

No, it's ancient, and would die a crippled death on anything new. The latest equivilent would problem be the X1600Pro or thereabouts, even when it came out the X550 was a very budget card, much like the X1550/X1600Pro/X1650Pro (Or in Nvidias line, the 7600GS/8300GS/7300GT) would be now. But to be honest, the cards that fall into the same category these days as the X550 did in its day are still quite poor for gaming, at least, for the latest games, depending on what you play even an X550 can be adequate for certain genres of game.

I think the best thing would be for you to post your current computer specs, and your budget.

Pc was bought 21 months ago. My daughter plays The Sims 2 with 6 expansion and 4 stuff packs. During gameplay lately it's either freezing or crashing. Checked for virus, spyware etc with Norton Internet Security Suite 2007, everything clear. Maybe it needs to be upgraded.

    Fujitsu Siemens Scaleo P.
    Intel Pentium 4 Processor 630
    3.0 GHz, 800MHz FSB, 2Mb cache
    1024Mb DDR RAM
    250GHZ SATA Hard Disc Drive
    256 ATI Radeon x550HM Graphics
    Windows XP

Nah, that machine should run sims fine (I think). Have you a load of crap running at startup?

Like Khannie said the Sims 2 isn't going to overly tax the X550. Go to run and type 'Msconfig' and go to startup, there you can see a list of and select what does and does not start upon booting, its a good way to stop a lot of unncessary programs starting up and wasting memory. Also, download, update and run Spybot Search and Destroy to make sure spyware is not an issue. It's an unrelated matter, but I would get rid of Norton, it's a joke. Use AVG instead, in conjuction with Spybot. Much, much more efficient.

Also, it could be possible that the card really is overheating, download and install AtiTool, leave it running, it will display the cards temperature in the taskbar. Keep an eye on that and see how its doing.

There's 16 running at start up. I've unclicked 4 as I'm not really sure what all the others are. What should be running at start up? Have tried several times today to download AVG but it's not working.
