Carbon crashes :-(

Unfortunately a crash has left me needing a new fork for my Trek 5000. LBS reckons a generic carbon fork (~€120) will do the trick; this is certainly a lot cheaper than a replacement Bontrager fork (~€350).

Now I don't think the original fork on the 5000 was anything special, it is listed as "Bontrager approved" on the spec sheet. It's carbon with an alloy steerer, same as the generic one.

Should I just go for the generic- any difference from the original? Or should I be looking at this as an opportunity to upgrade?

EDIT: Actually having a closer look at the head tube I think I may be needing more than a fork :-( Time to look into Trek's crash replacement policy I suspect:

    You ok?

Sorry to hear about the damage to the bike, fingers crossed that Trek do crash discounts.

Amazingly I am absolutely fine- rear ended a car and went through his rear windscreen. A few very minor cuts and bruises. My fault entirely and the driver was very good about it. Unfortunately it is looking like the bike will be substantially more expensive than the windscreen!

Glad to hear that you are largly ok. I assume that you already know that Trek offer crash discounts: http://www.trekbikes.com/uk/en/support/warranty/
    Carbon crash replacement policy
Assessing any damage done to a carbon fiber part requires more experience than is needed to inspect metal parts. If you crash or impact your bike and the force of the impact is absorbed by a carbon part, we strongly encourage you to replace the part, even if there are no indications of damage. If such a crash or impact occurs, Trek offers a crash replacement program for carbon parts, substantially reducing any replacement cost. To take advantage of this program, contact us using the information listed above and ask for the Warranty department.
