What is it that skanger kids like about shining a green (i.e. more expensive than red but really damaging to eyes) laser pointer through my window?

Ignore them and they will go away.

Lasers are only damaging if held on the eye for an extended period of time, 10 seconds or more. Stare at the sun, its brighter. (I know it's night time, but now you have something to look forward to tomorrow :D)

Are those yokes still around? Remember a few years ago everyone had the red ones in cinemas and plays etc, annoying as fook!

Nah they're gone now - mammy must have called them in for their supper. These were really bright green lasers though! I did shut my wooden blinds so there wouldn't be any more of it!

    Jeez, that's hi-tech!

Have to say I wouldn't see the need, though ... mine seems to target in fairly automatically, as if on a homing beacon ...

I'm sure it would take a lot less than 10 seconds for the likes of a 100mw+ green laser to damage your eye. Sure they can burn holes in and cut thin plastics quick enough. All depends on the power. You can get them from 5mw right to 250mw and beyond. (Although I highly doubt the guy shining it in peoples windows has anything like that)

They're in a completely different league to red lasers. Anything over 5mw and you're talking about something which could be considered illegal by Irish law.

Massive and incorrect generalisation there. You can't say they arent damaging for short periods without knowing how powerful the particular laser is.

As the OP correctly states, green lasers are typically more powerful than the old red pointers that ever eejit used to have a few years ago. The average 5mW green laser (5 times the legal limit here) is certainly something i wouldnt want shined in my eyes for even half a second.

And it's completely possible these days to buy online a hand-held laser 50 or 60 times the 1mW legal limit, which would almost certainly blind you before you can blink or look away.

I've been trying to find out what the actual limit is. Did you hear from a proper source that it is 1mw? The guys who use them over on astronomy Ireland forums seem to think that 5mw is fine and to stick with that as it's perfect for star pointing. Plus it doesn't pose much more risk than a standard red laser.

The European limit (for commercial laser pointers) is 1mW and the US limit is 5mW.

I remember a few years ago when I used to play in pub bands there was always some asshole who thought it was hilarious to blind the band while they were playing - bad idea though, once we spotted who it was we used to play Denis Leary's Asshole song and point to said knob the whole way through it was great too the crowd would join in the spelling part at the end and point to him too - stopped quite quickly I can tell you!

It's a shame someone would shell out the extra cash for a higher energy laser just to annoy people.

Anyway head to your local university research department, nick a nice pulsed laser, then return fire!
