Reading/Listening?

Just wondering what exactly is the idea about not being allowed to read at a table at the table but you are allowed to listen to music?

Some ppl say they listen to music cause it passes time and you don't have to put up with some ppl talking crap, however for those ppl who don't like listening to music but perfer reading, they are not allowed, which is a bit unfair.

Do you think that if players where not allowed to listen to music, that it could affect there game, For example i've seen(only a few times live) that Phantom_Lord and LuckyLlyod wear big earphones... - could you guys play equally well without them for the whole nite?

Where are you not allowed read at the table?

I remember seeing a pro player reading at the table (not tv table) during the WSOP ME. He had busted on that level the last two years and was reading and folding until it passed.

As for the music, it shouldn't change their game, or else they shouldn't be listening in the first place. But some players would actually get better if they didn't listening to music and paid more attention.

It slows the game down and its showing complete disrespect for the players around you. At least with headphones you can still watch the game and know when its up to you to act.

The Fitz for one , now this was over a year ago but i rememeber reading a book at the table the dealer had passed no remarks but when someone at the table asked about it i was told it was against the rules to read at the table and i would have to put it away.

yeah definately not allowed in the fitz.. remember a guy reading one of the poker mags being asked to put it away and when he asked for an explanation they told him it was antisocial...... thought the explanation by the dealer was funny.....

yea but if you fold, ur not slowing down the game by readin, you are just passin the time...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,881 ✭✭✭bohsman

Chances are the dealer will have to constantly tell you that its up to you, you'll say oh, have a look at your cards, look around to see what action youve missed, ask how much it is to call etc.

as an aside, I think if you are listening to headphones and have to be told what bets are and so on more than once you should have to take them off

A good player should have enough going on around him to 'pass the time'.

If you need to be reading a book at a poker table to pass time, or avoid going bust, the game isn't really for you.*

*general statement, not directed at you Ace.

I know that a good player should have, but as hectorjelly said "if a player listening to headphones [has] to be told what bets are and so on more than once you should have to take them off" - this equally slows down the game

but a player with headphones is still paying attention to the game he is still seeing what action has takin place and when it is his turn to act!! and you will notice 90% of players with earphones will allways only have them in one ear!!

Still probably essential for a long decent buy - in tourney or a night where I am going in solely to play cash.

    but why is it essential?

and as some one previously said, there are clips from the WSOP which show players to be reading, so is the, no reading rule at the table only a rule impose by a particular club?

    IMO
it is very disrespectfully to the other players to be reading and not paying attention the game but that's America and from some of the carry on we see at the WSOP i don't think respect for other players is a thing that is common!
However I'm almost certain that that rule no reading is enforced throughout Dublin.

Ok i'm not trying to be awarkard, but suppose to you make it to a live main table(say the Irish Open feature table) and as i am aware your not allowed to listen to have ear phones when filming is taking place, and a player like bob battersby is sitting to your left, would your game be badly affected or could you cope with it...

I listen to music always when playing poker, if the conversation is good then I will usually take them out because after all it is a social game.

If there are muppets at the table, in go the two earphones and I play my game. Occasionally you're not sure if someone has called or raised, i.e. when they throw in a 500 chip and we can't hear if they said raise or call - but the dealers usually don't have a problem with that.

The reading however I find to be rude and agree that the game is not for them, it will slow the game down for sure.

ok so lets clear this up, you can listen to music, eat and drink, but you cannot read?
I am not aware of too many places that this is the case. And i am quite certain, actually 100% certain that a certain well known irish poker player spent a good twenty minutes reading a magazine during a tourney in the fitz whilst he awaited the delivery of his vegetarian dish, this occurred about one year ago. The player shall remain nameless, suffice to say he won around a million dollars at a major main event during 2005 and he wasn't the winner or runner-up for that matter.
The reason i am so aware of this is that he actually put down the mag. at one stage to declare himself allin over my raise.

i much prefare not listning to music at the table as it means your probably in an enjoyable game but at the weekends i find they help control your concentration even if there's the usual mayhem going on around you. During the week there's more regulars and soberness so i generally wouldnt use them. maybe if gordon was there

You think you can catch Mr Flash? You think a guy like that comes this close to getting caught, and sticks his head out? If he comes up for anything it'll be to get rid of me. After that... my guess is you'll never hear from him again. The greatest trick Mr Flash ever pulled was convincing boards players he didn't exist. And like that... he's gone..

I was playing in the jackpot a couple of weeks ago, and you were on the other table. I was envious of the deaf that evening.
