Data CDs from Win98 not readable in Vista

    Hi all,

I got a problem reading / copying and generally opening up data from both CDRs and CDRWs in Vista.

I have copied data - jpegs, pdfs, doc and xls files from my Windows 98Se computer onto both CDRs and CDRWs. I checked before deleting the original files they were correctly copied and they were. I did this by using a different CD drive on the same computer. Files and folders were there and readable - ie the data itself and not shortcuts.

On my new Vista laptop the cds are readable and files and folders appear. However, when I look at say a pdf which I opened up successfully in Windows 98SE a few moments earlier, I am told by Vista that the pdf is 0 bytes and will not open as its empty. Other files like doc, xls etc also appear to be 0 bytes in Vista even though they are infact multipaged documents.

I cannot keep the old Windows 98SE computer running just for these CDs as I need to be able to store all my Windows 98 data on my new laptop.

Just how can I make Vista "see" these files so that I can use the data. (Putting Vista on my old cumputer is not viable as its old and not mobile as its a desktop PC).

    Regards,

    HPMan

I take it the CD's filesystem is CDFS and not something else. Can't really offer much of a solution for the CD problem, I'm afraid.

I'd suggest, however, that you copy the files back to your Windows 98 install and connect it to your Vista PC using a crossover networking cable. Share the folder containing the files and then copy them from the Win98 machine to your new machine.
