with a degree in economics perhaps you could look for a job in the Central Statistics Office?
Or perhaps the department of foreign affairs.
When you started your degree what did you want to do?

Try consulting with a Big 4 company, or specialist consulting company

I dunno, Economic/Business Journalism with a newspaper, work with the EU/OECD, department of Finance, Big 4, investment banking, corporate finance, economic research with the CSO/ESRI...

What do you actually want to do?!

If you actually just want money and don't care, you could do Fund accounting or become a tradesman!

I agree with Wook, you seem very disorganised for someone who has done a Masters in IR. Go to the careers office in your college and talk to them. Any prospective employer would expect you to have a career plan especially as you are at postgrad level and you specialised in IR. It won't look good if you get to interview stage and you don't have a mid term career plan.

I'd recommend you start taking this seriously. You were obviously interested in IR to begin with or you wouldn't have done a postgrad in it. It is very specialised so you must have done some sort of interview or written application. Why did you choose this course? Even if you go to career counselling they will expect you to have some answers yourself. They won't wave a magic wand and tell you what to do, they can only show you the options that are open to you based on the career you're interested in.

    Edit
Also, saw in your second post that you are interested in a lucrative career. Are you being smart arsed? I have a degree and a masters and I had to start at the bottom. Don't think you will get special treatment for having a ma. You have to learn your trade no matter what you do.

I'd agree with the other posters that you've a terrible attitude OP.

The ERSI were looking for staff a while back. Interesting area to be in but it certainly ain't lucrative.

    http://www.analyticpartners.com/default.htm

Desperate for staff. Analyst work for people with post grad qualifications.

My Degree is in Economics. Tried the civil service but you certaily won't get lucrative at the start in there. I ended up doing Accountancy.
No matter what you do you will need to start from the bottom. Its all well and good if you have all these papers but you've no experience! Good luck whatever you do.

I have an idea where i'd like to work, the point of posting here is to see if any one comes up with something that catches my eye.

Saying such and such a job would only return answers in or around that field which i'm quite familiar with, the point of this exercise is to see what other directions i could go. Thats the reason "my attitude stinks" to quote one helpfull poster.

Dublindude, how did you hear about the analyticpartners job?? Do you work there by chance?? Whats the salary/conditions

One big interest of mine would be to spend a 3-4 years working abroad in New York any jobs you feel would give me an oppurtunity like that

how do people say ohh u have a MA and u still dont know what you want to do??

i'm currently starting a 1 year ma in hr but only doing it for the benefit of being qualified to a masters level.I dont want to work in HR but i know that a MA stands to you hence why i am doing it I dont know what i actually want 2 end up doing it may be stock broking hence why im taking a night course in that aswell.

Don't dispair, and dont take a job for the sake of having a job.BIG mistake.

Try the site e financial, they have job lisitings around the world but be wary if you put your cv up on it funds jobs will ring you by the bucket load!!

Why does everybody thing tradesmen are ho highly paid?

Yes they earn very good money but if you have a 2.1 degree in economics and a masters your earning potential is much much higher than any tradesmen.

How can i fulfill my "earning potential", am interested in the financial area. Is there any jobs that are interesting in finance, you know really don't want to be a small part in a chain putting together PCPS's figures for it to go on to another department and i'm really not too sure what the PCPS's figures are but all i know is that i need to send them to Mary by 3 o'clock. You know that sort of jazz. What i mean is a Macro level job.......................

looks interesting say it would be hard work probably worth it for 4-5 years to get experience and cash together. those guys you know are they doin savage hours???

what are you at yourself imalegend, in college, what course

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 269 ✭✭imalegend

you savage hours for the 1st year till the new graduates come along....1st year they had to do 7am to 6pm then out on the piss with clients 2/3 nights a week was a must.

im doing a masters in hr,just for the pure simple reason of having a masters not for the hr qualifaction..Doing a night course in stockbroking and grinds in maths to try and get me up to speed...you have a super background to get into something like this if you were interested but they also base alot of the interview on how you can deal with people.e.g. their clients.

Very hard to get into hence all the extra stuff im doing but if you do get in and your in any way good there is a great job there with huge earning potential.

thanks for the input Purecork, you've quoted me so much "i feel very important"

Information is king, you talk to people, you pick up info and maybe it might set you of in a different direction or open up some area you never thought of.

Your input did neither but thanks anyway..............................

Waste of time doing a Masters in HR if you want to get into stockbroking.
Try finance, quantitive finance, financial and industrial maths or finance and capital markets.

Would expect that aftyer 15 years of education, one would have some idea of what one was doing, why and what not. But that's more me than you.

MO would see them as an odd combination and probably best suited for generalist work in Civil/Public services. Hardly lucrative but more ball busting on initiative from what I hear.

    Good luck anyways.

Why are (some) people so sanctimonious 'cause the OP wants to cash in his college chips and get rich fast? That's the dream. Why do it slowly if it can be done quickly?

OP, I have an honours degree and a half a masters (don't ask). Employers don't seem to give a balls. My degree isn't Economics though. I'd say it's one of the better ones for employers, all things being equal. That said, going in as a grad rarely offers lots of upfront cash.

Why not start a business? You're obviously not a dumbo. When you hit the big time, PM me and I can come onboard as an advisor or something. With your aversion to hard graft and my thirst for easy cash, the world will be our oyster.
