I have used both and find µTorrent better simply because it is far lighter on resources.

    Ditto.
Azureus is great, but uTorrent just hedges it...

Try to get an old version of uTorrent, say 1.6 or 1.6.1. The newer versions periodically phone home and nobody is quite sure why.

Azureus is an absolute memory hog.. uTorrent ftw!

Now if they just made a Mac client - i'm using Transmission as my Mac client but always have uTorrent running in Crossover just in case.

Here's some info I came across recently,

    http://howto.wired.com/wiredhowtos/index.cgi?page_name=optimize_bittorrent_to_outwit_traffic_shaping_isps;action=display;category=Play

I've just enabled the recommendations on my Azureus client and it seems to be maintaining a better average speed. Before I was far more bursty in my torrent downloads.

I'm 99.% sure that NTL is employing traffic shaping for torrents.

    Is that so?

Run a packet sniffer while using both versions. See for yourself :P

Thats what happens when you dont have much ram.

Id say azereus, as its much better for network traffic.

    Nope, their not.

I had their 6mb (10mb) package when i was in tallaght, and i would always max out the line constantly.

I note you said "I had", when did you last have there service?

Because from my own usage and others it certainly would seem like there traffic shaping or blocking ports :)

Looks like it's version checking at best. At worst, it's tinfoil hat time. TBH, I'd never use a non-open source torrent client. uTorrent's not open source and the page says it will likely never be. There is no reason offered. There are too many free versions out there to ever actively make money from it (someone correct me if I'm missing something).

edit: He makes money from donations. Fair enough.

    but...

    this....
Alex H: There is a certain level of mistrust directed at closed source applications like uTorrent. Why is the uTorrent source code not available? Will uTorrent ever be open source?

Ludde: There are no plans to make uTorrent open source. If uTorrent becomes open source, it will result in hacked clients, or companies modifying the code and creating malware clients. If uTorrent is closed source, I can make sure that the quality of uTorrent stays high and that it doesn’t become a bloated client. Further, it makes sure that the source code is not used by dubious companies or for dubious purposes.

Is pure b****x tbh. There's nothing preventing him from keeping his own source code tree to maintain what he sees as best practice. If it's about money, just come out and say it. Hell, I write closed source software with the intent of making money.

that quote is taken from here.

I left tallaght 3 months ago, and ntl dont to cable where i live now
. But i was averaging over 500gb a month for about 5/6 months. And nothing was said. You just need to set up the clients properly is all.

I was doing a decent amopunt on NTL to, but as of late regardless of ports or trackers used its dead in the water....well ok I lie slightly, I can manage somewhat decent downloads sometimes but uploads are good as dead.

t imho I'm certain hey are throttling, traffic shaping or blocking ports these days..

The issues are nothing to do with a client incorrectly configured :)
