Just changed over to an XPS, is there any way that I can transfer my music to the new laptop using the ipod itself? I dont want to try it without someone giving me a step-by-step cos I've heard horror stories of ipods getting wiped clean but I know there's something you can click or unclick in itunes to stop it doing that...

    Help please!

iTunes itself won't allow you to sync music off an iPod. You might be able to find a third party application that will do it for you.

You could copy your music library out to a DVD or external HDD and reimport them into the new computer. You will need to authorise the computer to play any iTS bought music, but thats as simple as entering your password when you try to play a track.

I've done this loads of times.

Your music library is kept as 2 files in My Documents/My Music/iTunes/, "iTunes Library.itl" and "iTunes Library.xml". You are best off copying that entire iTunes folder to your new machine.

Question is where did you store your music on your current machine? Manually managed iPod? All music kept organised by iTunes in a specific folder? Or all music scattered around your hard disk?

When you place the iTunes folder on your new machine it'll expect to find all the music in the same place as was stored on your old machine. In My case iTunes organizes and stores all my music etc in 'c:\media\music\' but the default is to store it in that iTunes folder for you.

This way your ratings an play counts and playlists will stay intact. But you may need to do a complete re-sync with your iPod on the new machine. Can't remember as I've only ever ran my iPod off the one. But have my music library on up to 3 machines.

I've got my itunes directory on an external drive.

Maybe you could move your music to an external drive ?

Tells you to download a program called Podutil which will allow you to copy any songs off of your iPod (or all) and it will name the files based on the tags.

Edit: If you set your iPod to manually manage music, then go into my computer, "show hidden files and folders" then double click your ipod> iPod Control>Music and all your songs will be there in folders called F02,F02,F03 etc.
Only problem is that they are named things like ADUP, CXYD, so its impossible to tell which songs you are looking at.
