How do I send a telegram?

Mods, I've had a look around the site.

I don't think Nets&Comms is the place, and nowhere immediately jumps out for this particular query.

Does anyone know how I go about sending a telegram.

A friend is getting married in the US and A this weekend, and I can't make it.

Of course, I could email the best man, but I'd really like to send a telegram.

How much does it cost, and will only certain hotels accept them?

    Thanks.

Isn't it one of the services listed in the front of the phonebook?

Didn't I hear this on today fm this morning? Just looked at that site and a telegram looks suspiciously like a fax. For 30 dollars a pop plus per word charge I think I should get into this!

What's the difference between this and a fax?

    What?

Was it on Ray Darcy's show?

    Tell me it wasn't.

I thought I remember hearing a year ago that the telegram is officially dead due to low demand. Maybe this was only in Britain though. link. Wazdakka is correct.

You need to find yourself a De Lorean car, fit it with a flux capacitor, find a nice stretch of road, gun it to 88 mph and head back in time to when people still used telegrams...

I wasn't concentrating on the radio, but I'm sure they had something about someone looking for a telegram. Was definately today anyway. Pretty sure it was a fix it friday thing but I was going through a bad coverage area!

Look lads, I know all about emails, fax machines and even text messages.

But I want to send a telegram for the novelty I suppose, I can't afford a proper present, so I reckon my mate would like the fact that I spent the time sending the telegram.

I do like the DeLorean idea though.

Oh and Cheers Wazdakka, that looks like it could be a runner alright.

Well the first thing you do is hop in your Deloreon, go back to 1885, a guy called doc brown is the man to see, he'll set you straight. It'll have the guys in the telegram deliver office betting for the next 122 years if the wedding will take place and whether your mad or not. Then, this weekend it'll get delivered on time.

That or ring the post office, I'm sure they're the people for this kind of thing.
