    Hello,

I was wondering could I pick your brains.
Basically I have what’s called a deep bite. My top teeth overlap my bottom similar to this pick

    http://www.head-face-med.com/content/figures/1746-160X-3-15-6-l.jpg(The before picture’s)

This has always made wearing a gum shield for any length of time nearly impossible for me as I constantly gag. I think this is due to mouth being so wide open as the gum shield stops my teeth overlapping. I’ve tried the cheaper home made jobbies and cut them to shreds but it makes little difference. I’ve also recently tried a shock doctor but it was much the same.

Has anyone had a similar situation? Any ideas?

    Cheers.

    Martin.

My suggestions for people who find wearing gumsheilds uncomfortable are this...

Buy a cheap one and make it fit as best you can.
Wear it while watching tv, reading a book what ever. Until you can wear it and be comfortable with it.
Then start running with it in.
Then start sprinting, doing you warm ups etc.
Then start sparring with it in.

Besides if your training hard gagging is the least of your worries, try puking with one in, the swallowing said vomit to continue sparring without anyone knowing.

    Hahahah.

Okay, so failing that. Go and check out a dude on Pearse Street who does the pro gumsheilds for various dentists. Dark Warrior who posts here knows about him used him, swears by him I suppose.

    Peace

    Hi Martin,

My brother is a dentist so I got his free advice for you.

He was saying the most comfortable way would be to get a custom moulded one from your dentist or one of those denture place you's see around town.

However this may not solve your problem.

There is 2 different types of of your condition & I've found out today I have the other 1:eek: I have a slight overbite but when I close my mouth there is a little space so my bottom teeth feel like they're nearly touching the roof of my mouth.... I have a custom one & it's excellent! Don't notice I'm wearing it.....Can't recommend them highly enough.

If like the picture you provided you have the other type where there is very little space between your top & bottom teeth you may not be able to get a gum sheild that will allow you to full close your mouth, it may feel like the gum sheild is resting on your bottom teeth....not ideal for punches to the chin.

What he was saying though is the fact you gag a lot is nothong to do with the fact that you can't close your mouth properly with the other gum shields, some people are just gaggers so you might want to take FiannaGym.com's advice but with a custom fitted one instead of a cheap one. Just to get use to it being in your mouth.
Wear it while watching tv, reading a book what ever. Until you can wear it and be comfortable with it.
Then start running with it in.
Then start sprinting, doing you warm ups etc.
Then start sparring with it in.

Hope this helps & best of luck with it.

Thanks for the info guys, much appreciated.

I think I might actually be somewhere between the 2 in regards to space between my top and bottom teeth. Your exactly right in a standard gum shield rest's on my bottom teeth and makes me feel like my mouth is open fairly wide and I know exactly what you mean about punches to the chin.

My bottom teeth like yours also feel like they are close to touching the top gums but my back teeth meet before that happens (hope that makes sense)
There is however a small gap between the top and bottom front teeth but it’s only a few mm at best. I wonder how thick the custom made ones are, maybe a dentist could work something out.

    Cheers again guys.

    Martin.

You might be better with a Brain Pad? http://www.brainpads.com/

Upper and lower teeth are moulded into it, with a gap being left so you can breath through the mouth as well. It positions the jaw down and forward to lessen shock being transmitted into the noggin, as well as keeping the airway well open. Designed for American Football, it may suit better than the cheapy thin gumshields.
