Anyone with a knowledge of wireless adapters?

Ok, Ive been looking around for a wireless adapter with a semi-specific chipset, I dont care about the brand its the chipset that i need.

The card needs to be capable of rf monitor mode and that it pass monitor mode packets up via the PF_PACKET interface. Known chipsets capable of this are aironet, orinoco and prism2, not quite sure about others but i know for a fact that most broadcom chipsets(commonly found in belkin products) are not capable of the above.

Does anyone know if there is a shop(ive look at the usual suspects, pixmania/peats/marx/expansys) that sells any brand of wireless adaptor(preferably pci or usb) with the chipsets above?

well using rf monitor and pk_package dosent necessarily mean or involve hacking, id like to avoid ebay if possible but will use it if i have to.

The D-Link DWL-G550 (PCI, Atheros chipset) can be got from Peats or MaxB's.

Also the D-Link DWL-G122 (version B1, C1 only) (USB, Ralink Chipset) are available from Peats, Maplen (was on sale last month for both 50€ :/ ) and PC-Word for ~45€

I've been able to use Broadcom chipsets with RF monitor mode happily with the newer in kernel drivers.

    and the PK_PACKET? :P

BOF, i was looking into that exact model yesterday, and might give it a go thanks :)

its not so easy to get exact specs on the devices, most of the available information is pretty basic.

Check out the Aircrack-ng site. There's a hardware section that goes through all hardware makers and chipsets and gives info on monitor mode drivers and packet injection which is what I think you're talking about.

I use the Atheros based Netgear WAG 511 (MadWiFi Drivers) which is a dual band pcmcia card, also a SWEEX USB device bought in Easons for 29.95 which is Ralink 2570 based and also supports injection with patched drivers.

This is the list of supported devices.

    Also checkout Backtrack2.
