Reading the post on guy loses job for being honest, I am sure everyone has put a little fib on their cv..Or a big fib !!
Just reading the post on guy losing his job for being honest.

Reminds me of a few yrs ago, when I was up **** creek for a decent job after severel low paying ones, Decided to totally reinvent myself.

I Wiped out 8 yrs and started with a clean sheet. Got a courier friend to get blank letterheads, wrote one or 2 refs on them. Even got some logos off the net, put them on a4 paper, printed them off and basically put down whatever I wanted ( within reason) and after a few tries, got a good job with a Company car etc ! Got me in the door of that industry and am now self employed. Even put friends phone numbers on cv for reference check. Do firms actually really check up on these things ?

Basically if you have the neck you can reinvent yourself.

Not going for a job as a surgeon or CEO, you can with, some basic photoshop skills you can pull it off. You must be up to the interview though. But brass neck can get you places !!

No pc police telling me that its dishonest etc...I know it is, But the most they can do is rumble you and say no... But once you are in the door, and do the job well, nobody really cares.

I am not talking about covering up a criminal record...But suppose you could do that too. Head down, do the job...etc !!

I don't tell blatant lies because it just makes it more difficult to prepare for interviews. It's alot easier to talk about things that are true than to make up details about a fictional event. I do embellish things when it's necessary, and choose my words carefully to maybe suggest one thing without saying it, or to give a particular impression. But I don't like to get myself into a web of lies, because if I slip up during the interview, it can be quite embaressing, not to mention I won't get the job!

I'm not morally opposed to lying on a CV though.

As Dave said, I play around with words to get the maximum out of something on the CV.

never lied on a CV, but wouldn't ever be to honest, dont think i'd get a job if i wrote a real 'Personal' description.

In my spare time i enjoy, sleeping till 3pm, watching unhealthy amounts of Adult films (my preference is for Large Asian Ladies) Chronic masturbater, my favorite drink is White Lightening Cider and i dabble in drugs (but never in work), in closing i am hardworking, honest and reliable

hmm..maybe a couple of exaggerations aren't any harm..I do think being plain honest would be a mistake!
Nobody wants to hear the ugly truth about what you get up to off duty :D

"Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound (and faster than that caped lad in tights)!" Now, do I have to remove this from my CV? It's only a little exaggeration...

Employers 'buy' workers. Workers have to 'sell' themselves. Marketing yourself correctly makes all the difference. Even so, as with anything 'purchased' - it has to live up to it's promise as much as possible, or you risks being returned, refunded, or in a skip...

No. Never would and I wouldnt ever tell anyone to either.
The CV is a document to get you an interview, and it will be the bases of a discussion you will have for a potential employee.

if you get asked something, and you have to make things up, then it can go terribly wrong. And if you get found out, then you will certainly not get the position.

oh, and moved to the work forum, where tis more relevant :)

I wouldn't outright lie on my CV either but not getting the job shouldn't bother you if you do lie. After all you more than likely wouldn't have got to the interview in the first place if you just told the truth!

The one thing that annoys me is the ads that come from the employers/agencies. Now if only they didn't lie.

It's amazing however how many 'IT sys admins, consultants, managers' come to me with an extremely crappy looking CV....made in Word...

as an interviewer i tend to look at the CV and pick on the little hole and scratch it a bit and see what comes loose.

I Know someone who Blatently lied on her CV, and Has a 45,000 euro a year job working for a bluechip company.

Depressing, for the rest of us, isnt it!

Doctoring a CV will work for some job interviews and for some candidates. I'm sure there are as many cases where the interview would be cut short after 10 minutes and the candidate would be thanked for wasting everyones time.

Never lied in my CV, but a few interviewers have tried to catch me out. Have "qualified lifeguard" on the CV. One tried to catch me out on it, but couldn't, as I am actually a qualified life guard. Actually had a 2 minute talk on where we trained to be lifeguards, and the difference in training methods (in the time I was training, the methods changed completely 3 times).

I considered boosting up my degree on my CV at one point. Lots of openings for people with firsts, didn't do it in the end but do you think any company realistically would check up on your college results?
