i have vista on an x6800 pc, and my mediacenter is mce 2005 on a 3ghz p4

thinking of scrapping mce 2005 and putting the tuner card in the vista pc, leaving the pc as the homue computer and hooking up 3 xbox 360 extenders, (when the cores drop below €200 new)

anyway, how many extenders can you connect simultaneous

eight is a common figure bandied around. It depends on available bandwidth and the content being watched on each extender.

For it to work well, you want a Gigabit backbone and 100Mb clients to ensure smooth running. Ideally you would use another network for internet/email access.

Three will be fine, like I say, have a GB card in the MCE PC, connected to a GB switch. The XB360 is a 100MB client anyway so it shouldnt hog the line. If you can, have another, seperate network for internet access, meaning each computer can have two network cards, one for internet (Wireless would be fine) and one for LAN including your fileshares and MCE streaming.

    great news thanks SouperComputer

the plan will be to feed broadband straight to the mce into a 100ethernet, then set the mce to internet connection share down the 1gb ethernet, into a 1gb router and off to the extenders

set the mce to wake on lan, that way when i switch on an extender the pc will wake and offer mce or plain broadband for live\trailers

now if only i could find a way to reduce the 360's power consumption

Im not sure why you would use ICS on the MCE machine. /boggles

It just adds to the complication and potential downtime.

    My suggestion:

Standard router with a decent hardware firewall & maybe wireless & QOS if you are using VOIP
Gigabit switch which has the MCE computer connected VIA Gb and all others (including your extenders), and the router via 100Mb.

i just found that my mce 2005 won't stay asleep if its set to wake on lan and internet is available on that network, maybe i'll try a router with a better firewall

so with my suggestion there will be no network activity on that network until an extender is turned on, then the pc will wake (on lan) and feed internet access into the gb router
