    Syria 'fires on Israel warplanes'

Syria says its air defences have opened fire on Israeli war planes which had entered Syrian airspace overnight.
Israeli planes had "dropped ammunition" over desert areas of Syria, before being forced to leave, according to the official Syrian news agency, SANA.

Israel radio quoted an unnamed Israeli army source as saying no air strike had been carried out, Reuters agency said.

The Syrian news agency says the action took place "without causing human or material loss".

Syria and Israel have remained technically at war since the seizure of the Golan Heights in 1967.

Tensions between Israeli and Syria have been rising in recent months. Both countries' leaders have said they do not want a war, while accusing the other side of arming for a conflict.

Syria says it last fired at Israeli warplanes in June 2006, when Israeli aircraft flew over the summer residence of the Syrian president, while he was inside.

Sounds like a crock of crap.

When I was in Lebanon in 2001 the Syrians moved some radar down south of the Bekaa Valley, the IAF bombed them immediately and the remaining radar units quickly legged it north again.

    The Syrians are chickensh*t fvcks.

Plus the IAF has no real operational reason to fly over and bomb any part of Syria as IDF units on the Golan can reach Demascus from there.

Over flights are common place over Lebanon and Syria, but I very much doubt it that the IAF dropped bombs on Syria.

As for breaking the sound barrier, anyone here on this forum who's been to Lebanon can confirm thats common place too, maybe thats the source of this 'bombing'?.

I've been in southern lebanon and seen a lot of overlfights and the sonic boom is possibly the after burners kicking in.

The Syrians are by far a bunch of incompentent morons who blow up Lebanese leaders when they dont get their way and as for the army, they are a joke.

Afterburner has to be on to make the AC accelerate into Mach speed. Unless of course your flying an F22 with "Super Cruise"

After burners kicking in sound nothing like an explosion or sonic boom.

I'd say they did go super sonic, but I think the ''ammunition'' being released was most likely chaff and flares when the Syrians began to lock on and track them.

You forgot the Tiffy and Rafale. :(

On a side note Saudi will be getting the Tiffy and maybe the Rafale, not really releated but it will make the region interesting and when Israel gets the F-35A. Then they will really push their luck with fly overs.

true, but the Saudi's have had reasonably top-end F15C's for 20 years and are still - like Syria - technically at war with Israel, yet they have never seen fit to challenge Israeli air power. you could easily argue that the current armouries of the IAF and KSAF are far more matched currently than they would be when Israel takes delivery of F-35 and KSA gets its Tiffy's.

True but the IDF/AF's (IAF=Iranian Air Force btw) F-15A/B/C/Ds are more capable than the Saudi F-15C/Ds because of upgrades. Then there are the IDF/AF's F-15I's which are a bit more capable than the Suadi's F-15S but Saudi have more S models than the IASDF have I's.

Saudi then have the Tornado ADV and IDS variants, but Israel have the second largest fleet of F-16s in the world that include everything from the Block 10 A/B models to the latest Block 50 C/D and Block 52+ I.

They are two very serious airforces in hardware alone.

In airforce alone yes. But when it comes to crewing the IAF has to win hands down again.

I remember talking to an Israeli tanker about the Syrian T-80 MBT and asking his opinion... "Martin, they burn just like every other Syrian tank I've ever engaged".

Just getting back to the OP, the Syrians are somewhat of a joke in the region.

    I presume you mean T-72.
    IAF=Iranian Air Force

Might want to ask them. They call themselves (translated) IRIAF: Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force. Check http://www.irandefence.net/.
    IAF is India.

At any rate, the story of bombs being dropped is gaining momentum. Apparently the target was a Hezbullah supply line.

    Yes I mean't the T-72 of course.

    IAF = Israeli Air Force.

Bombing an Hezbollah supply line would make sense. But again, if memory serve's me correctly I think the IAF hit targets just outside of Demascus and an Hezbollah HQ inside Demascus not so long ago.

That sonic boom you hear in South Lebanon is heard all along the aircrafts flight path, you just get it as it passes over your location.

Its scared the sh*t out of me once or twice. You know how usually you see the overflight then you get the 'Booooooooooooooom', well once I was in a mingy shop in Harris and the thing nearly took out the bloody windows, we thought it was a shelling :(

Monsour, he had his arm blown off year's ago. I believe at his house just outside Haddatha.

My first trip was in 1988-89 and he was like that then. His shop back then was down near Tibnine Bridge. And Camp Shamrock was nearer to Tibnine than it presently is. It was opposite 'Normaint Coy', which was a Polish camp last time I was there.

Yeah, it is a bit odd, isn't it, unless you consider it news that they actually took a try at shooting at them.

Now, a real headline would have been if they had actually managed to hit one.

The Syrians could hit a broad barman sideways with a bulldozer ;-)

Although they are good at supplying weapons to terrorists to do their dirty work ;-)

its an idication of Syrian mentality.

any sane person would howl about the outragous intrusion into a soveriegn state, go on about casualties - preferably handicapped orphans - and do the whole 'victim' thing.

Syria however, because its got an enormous chip on its shoulder about its place in the Arab world, honks off about how 'big-time' it is by firing on Israeli planes.

being a 'yes sir' state, it didn't occur to them that the world would see things from the opposite veiw, to see that the Israelis operate with inpunity over Syria - making the 'big-time' bluster look ridiculous.

the only people who've spoken about this raid are the Syrians, the headline reflects the way they wanted the story to be told. its not the Israelis' fault they are morons.
