i think ucd should do away with electives in level 3 and just have 10 modules. it would be so much better. What do u think ?

I completely agree with you, the idea of doing extra classes for the sake of it seems absolutely stupid to me!! I'm in final year now and have to pick 2 electives from level 2 or 3, so what am I going to do? I'm going to pick the easiest ones that I can find (probably from level 2 and as similar as possible to classes that I've done before) to lessen my already tough workload.

What! You aren't serious. Not even to allow people the option to take them?

I have 12 modules and all of them are in Level 3 Politics and Sociology.

yeah other colleges only have to do 10 modules but were stuck doing 12 and and 2 we dont even want to do. u should have the option to the extra 2 if u want. its ridiculous situation. also no1 even knows definitivly want the situation is with the electives ,some people say one thing and another person comes out and claims another. Jesus this is frustrating.

probably best is to pick an easyish maths option - something like basic statistics would probably be very useful to have under your belt.

I don't think that's the point of electives as an 'extra burden'. It's not about the bottom line as such. It's about offering the student an opportunity to gain an body of knowledge from your academic studies in UCD.

electives are fine in first and second year. il ike the elective idea for 1 or 2 years but if u still want o branch out in ur final year u proberly on the wrong course. extra modules in ur final year are not on, added pressure at exam times plus elective modules arent even reflected in ur degree. Also if ur unlucky and find an elective doesnt suit u, u could end up failing cause of ur lack of interest in the module, and its treated the exact same. seems ridiculous to me.

what do you mean about electives not affecting you degree?

I agree that it seems more logical to have the option of doing electives to build a broad base of knowledge in a certain area, or to broaden your horizons (no pun intended :p ) in first and even second year. However by third year the emphasis should be on specialising, ie deepening your knowledge of your chosen field. Also since people are also focusing on exams and degree results even more in final year, it doesn't seem helpful to most people to be choosing random topics of interest for courses at that stage. However, UCD has spoken and I doubt if things would change at this stage...
