Hi advice needed please. I just got this mail on Flickr and I'm looking for advice on whether should I sell a photo without attribution?
    Hi Jaqian,

I work for a company that is currently developing some publicly funded educational materials, that will eventually be available freely to students in the UK.

Would it be possible to pay to use 1 of your CC 'attribution only' licensed images (rnli lifeboat), so that we didn't have to attribute them to yourself? Our client is adamant that the images that we use are not, unfortunately, acknowledged. All rights would remain as is, and our client is not claiming ownership over your images.

If you agree that we can use your image, would it be possible to send a higher res image?

Many thanks, and look forward to hearing back from you. Feel free to ask if you need more information

    Matt

First point is that - hey, at least its nice to be asked!

And I guess for a million Euro you might even consider singing Yankee doodle dandy whilst running naked down O’Connell street ;o)

If thinking of allowing it - don't forget their assertion that they are working for a company that are developing publicly funded educational materials - so they are being paid for it (and as it is publicly funded I’d hazard a guess that they are being well compensated for *their* efforts).

It probably comes down to whether or not your want to make a few bucks from the image or not? Looking at the image - it's nice, probably means something to the three blokes on the lifeboat but further selling potential maybe limited enough. So it is an opportunity to turn a few quid on it which you otherwise may not have realised.

Ethically, Are you happy to be eh, 'bought' relinquishing your rights over the image to be used in this publication whatever it is?

You could always request a copy of the finished publication so that at least you can point family, friends, and potential clients to the image and say "look I took that!"

    Congrats on being considered anyway!

    Cheers.

will attribution lead to repeat business? probably not, given the educational nature of its use.
will agreeing to their terms lead to repeat business from the publishers? possibly.
would attribution even be noticed by people seeing the photo? probably not.

lack of attribution is not that uncommon. all depends on the money they're willing to pay.

I thought, generally if a publication pays for the image, they don't have to accredit to you. The money kinda does that for them.

Go for it if the money is right.
