    Hi All
I went to change the rechargeable batteries in my s5600 last night and noticed that two of the batteries had some green crap on it that had also got onto the contacts for the batteries.
    Is this damaging.
Can I clean it off with some soft sandpaper or something.
Guess I won't be leaving the batteries in the thing for extended periods again

    See attached........

Yes, you should clean it off. It's not highly corrosive, but I wouldn't leave it there if you can avoid it. Apart from anything, it will mean a bad contact if you put in batteries again.

To clean it, try using a cotton bud. Try it dry first, and if you need more cleaning, maybe try a little vodka (on the tip of the bud, not in the mouth!)

    it looks like oxidation

a weak acid will do it but sandpaper also

Steel wool is the business for stuff like this.

Just be careful with the sandpaper that you don't rub off any coating on the contacts. A lot of higher spec electronic contacts have a very thin gold coating for improved conductivity. You don't want to rub that off!!

Another option is the 'hard' part of an eraser.

Yes, that's the acid starting to leak through the vents. It's a sign of wear.
    Replace them
