Internet connection issues

Having a problem with my network connection. PC is directly connected to the router. Router connecting directly onto internet. Running Vista. The network icon on Vista shows a globe when the internet can be accessed. This often disappears and I cannot access the internet. But I can logon to the router and it has a WAN IP address. I cannot ping anything external when this happens.
I think this is to do with Vista as I have a laptop running XP and it never loses the connection.
    Any ideas whats happening?
