OK, so I've added scheduled task to automatically run an antivirus scan using scheduled tasks in XP.

How do I add a scheduled task to shut down the computer after the scan? Is there a file I can schedule to execute, that shuts down the computer?

Another option would be to use my power options to automatically shut down after X amount of time when not in use but I'd like to figure out the above question.
    All help appreciated.

You can use the "shutdown" command.

    shutdown -f -t 00

    Will force an immediate shutdown.

thanks. yeah i was aware of that but i wasnt sure how to create an scheduled task that would open the command prompt and enter the shutdown -s command.

However ive found the file tsshutdn.exe from the system32 folder that does the job nicely.

most antivirus programs scan every file you open and download, you only really need to do a full scan once (after you install it)

Don't forget though that certain viruses and malware can change the structure and properties of files so doing a full scan every so often is a good idea.
