As above, what is the usual cause for this and can it be fixed? Its gotten to the stage where people actually turn around to look at me before i pass them :o is there any point in buying a new exhaust? Any help appreciated

I just want to say; well done for doing something! They really can be infuriating sometimes when you think it's right by your ear only to find out they are 50m away and you've got some serious doppler yet to catch.

It's probably all exhaust. Find the hole and replace the part. Its more likely one of the pipes leading to your exhaust than the exhaust itself.

had the same problem. check if your exhaust is split. if it is buy a new one, but a lot of the time, it's just the head gasket which has rotted or burnt away and there's a bit of air coming through the joint (put your hand near the joining of the exhaust and the engine and you should feel air coming through). in that case just replace the gasket

Most of the times for me it's the pipe leading to the exhaust that is right underneath and so gets the most crud thrown up at it from the road that goes first casuing the noise, still part of the exhaust really I guess though.
