vegas or sydney would be my choices. Was in Rome for New Years 2005 (kind of sucked though :()

From what i read and heard New York is the worst place to go because everywhere is packed.

this is a very good website http://www.pubclub.com/newyear/index.htm

I was in Sydney for it in 2001 and it was fantastic. A cooler full of beer and ice, fireworks and 1 million around the harbour on a warm summers night. I know it is probably a bit far away for what you intend, but if not, I can't recommend it highly enough, unless it has changed since then for some reason.

Well Sydeny would be out of my price range but does sound pretty good. I'd be look for somewhere around Europe.

I'm heading to Berlin. There's a huge street party on New Year's Eve, apparently over one million at it last year. It'll be my first time in Berlin though, so can't recommend it yet!

There is a big street party in Edinburgh with fireworks from the castle that overlooks the main streets, but I believe it has been cancelled a few times in the last number of years due to weather, so it is not a guarantee. It is Hogmanay over there though as well, which I believe is Jan 1st itself, so even without street party thing it should be good craic. Scotland in winter though. Brrrrrrr.

Berlin & Edinburgh are good suggestions. if you can stretch to it New York is great too, you should be able to get flights around that time for less than €400.....
