Well I'm sure you're sick of hearing about accomodation woes at this stage but I have failed to secure student accomodation so its looking like either A) a flat with strangers
    B)digs
    C)or the dreaded commute.

Any advice for a 1st year student?

How long is the commute? You do still have one month 'til you start, you know!

From Kildare. Would'nt be the worst in the world but I wouldn't really be all that "involved" in "college life" would I?

Do you have any friends who'll be living in Dublin next year? If so, could you not move in with some people you know? - I ask not only as a suggestion, but because I still plan to go down that route with a friend of mine, and I'm hoping it's not too late to have any hope in finding somewhere...

Meh, it'd still be a pain in the ass coming that far. I'm sure (many) people do it but that wouldn't negate the painassiness of it all. Oh, and I'm sure you'll end up making mates in college who are good for a floor to sleep on.

I've got like, one good friend living in Dub. but he's already got room-mates (he's a year ahead of me)

maybe come into Trinity one day soon and have a look at the accommodation ads that are scattered around college notice boards.

Or, have a look on DAFT.ie for accommodation in student places like Rathmines (near Trinity Hall)...

If you just want to be within walking/bus distance of college then somewhere like rathmines would be perfect.

Think there is also a place on the North-side that is particularly popular ... Cabra?

As long as I'm staying with other studnets I don't mind. Just don't want to end up sharing with some 43 yr old industrial banker...

That's possibly one of the most specific requests in the history of accomodation renting :)

Ew. I have to start househunting soon, and I'm dreading it. Bah!

If anyone wants to do the work for me: I'd like to live in Dublin 6; however, Dublin 4 and Dublin 8 are also acceptable. There must be at least 1 bathroom for every 3 people in the house, and it must be close to the Luas, or within 40mins walking distance of college, and not more than 500e per month. I would like to share with rrrrrreasonably tidy/responsible people, but I'm pretty easy going.

This is starting to sound like a personals ad. Oh dear.

    Accommodation in Dublin = Non-existent!

Unless you're a super-rich mega-professional that is. I'd recommend getting onto DAFT, into the papers and assaulting your students union as soon as humanly possible. The accommodation drought was bad before all the leaving cert types got their offers through, now the second round is out it's only getting worse!

    So, digs or an appartment?

I got a flat right beside college and am sharing it with another TCD boardsie who is not a 43 year old industrial banker.

So to all those who say it can't be done - it can. There are flats around, you just have to keep looking and pushing.

There is also a forum for this (see my sig), but what I found very handy was Daft. Also, look for people willing to share a room for a short term (they could be moving out!) I got speaking to a few landlords that way whoose places are coming on the market about now.

maybe try other student accommodation like the nui residences? or how about the ifsc?

    Whats Griffith Halls like?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,434 ✭✭✭the flananator

Well its crunch time. I'm either going to get digs for a few months and then try and get an appartment with friends (all the while hoping for a cancellation from Trinity Halls), or I plunge into the unknown Griffith Halls for the year, where I (potentially) have greater possibilities for enjoying "college life".

    Thoughts?

I'm in the same situation, no place to stay. Just looking for accomodation online on studentlettings.ie and daft. So annoying and time-consuming. How much is griffith halls aamoi? also, how do you apply? is it too late?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,434 ✭✭✭the flananator

They're full as far as I know and pretty expensive. I think digs may be the best option...

That mightn't be to do with accommodation crises.
