    Anyone?

I'm thinking of getting one, just wondering what exactly is working on it here and what isn't.

I mean I understand all the unlock methods etc. but Im worried about getting it and using it on my Vodafone Blackberry package and then get landed with a massive bill.

The Blackberry deal I have covers unlimited web surfing... so does the iPhone use the same protocols? -?

I'm in exactly the same situation. Very happy with my current BB O2 package but wondering how the iPhone will fair on it, funcationality and cost wise.

I know there is a forum ginnypig coming along soon who might shed some light on it all.

Of course, gotta find the best way to source one first! :(

A friend of mine here in the US has one and the only thing I don't like about it is the fact that you can't use it as an external hard drive. Therefore you can't download things onto it. Whether or not you actually can thru hacks or settings I don't know as he doesn't seem to be able to use it that way. Otherwise it's fantastic, just like the adverts.

This probably doesn't answer your questions at all though!

in ireland calls in/out, sms in/out, email, edge (on o2) and youtube are working. so the only major thing that doesnt work is the visual voicemail cos that's network dependant. i bought the unlock software (http://www.iphoneworldwideunlock.com/) for AUD$60, about 40 quid, and now i just need to find somebody who's going to america to buy me one :(

As of last night I have a fully unlocked iPhone on Vodafone. I can confirm that all calling, sms, data works perfectly.

it looks like the most i can get out of vodafone is the 25mb data add-on for €15......ummmm i rekon this thing will eat that up in 2 weeks.....

they won't let me put 2 of the add-ons on the account and they don't seem to want to let me go on the blackberry add-on (100mb) coz its not a bb.

Could anyone with a vodafone bb out there post their gprs connection settings? Iphone won't let you input proxies into the edge/gprs connection, i think this would be a problem with using the BB apn....i'd love the 100mb though.

    Any thoughts???

    .
    .
In other issues the number format/recognition for incoming calls is a little barmy...it thinks its in the US and doesn't append the international code to the numbers, so i have to either amend my address book or hack the phone to the right number layout......might do the latter

Gmail, as its pop and not imap, doesn't play too nice if you use an email client on your computer too. I have worked around this by setting up another email account (IMAP) and automatically forwarding from gmail to the imap a/c, that the iphone pulls from. Though outbound mail from the iphone sends through google's server so the outside world doesn't know any better. The desktop app pulls from gmail through pop as normal.

I don't have my blackberry anymore.

But anyway, Blackberry's are configured through their own service. They connect to that and then pull the mail from there.

Just ring them up and tell them you have a blackberry that you bought SIM free and you want to use it ;)

Any trouble gettin iPhone unlocked? - If I buy one can you advise me? - Can't be that hard though can it?

    hehehe!!

its not too bad - just a bit of a drawn out process between the activation and sim-unlock and having to do a restore too.

In truth the most annoying thing is getting the sim-unlock app onto the phone in the first place.

I'll talk to vodafone tomorrow about that!

I've ordered one, should arrive either tomorrow or Friday. If not, I've been screwed.
    Unlocking shouldn't be a problem.
However, chances are, I'm going to coo over it for a while, and then will want to sell it.
I currently have a Blackberry 8800. I need the push e-mail, copy and paste etc, and I don't think the iPhone will deliver what I need it to.
I look after every piece of technology I buy lovingly, so if somebody is looking for an unlocked, brand new iPhone, I should be able to do somebody a good deal.
That is unless I like it too much.

I'm sure if you know SSH you can unlock the iPhone with a little effort.
I can't speak from experience however.

/edit - and that doesn't say anything about what Apple are going to fight against in the next software upgrade.

That sounds suspiciously like a 'selling pitch' which Im supposed to give out about... *shakes fist to give out* ... *joins queue in front place pushing everyone else out of the way*

I had to cancel my contract with O2 for my own safety. :D
Last Blackberry I had was on Vodafone... much better!

Bill Pay. So the 15 is a flat rate on top of my regular phone bill.

I read (somewhere fairly reliable, iirc) the other day that Apple said they won't aggressively pursue hacked iPhones, but obviously they won't support 3rd party apps either. At least that means they're unlikley to try and brick your iPhone via and iTunes firmware update.

Sorry I don't have the link handy! :(

Thats what I had :( O2 is just expensive I think.
But the data for 15euro is good.;)

I just found the service better compared to O2.
Thats just what I found anyway.

Apple changed their tune on that policy very quickly. They now say updates will more than likely break 3rd part apps.

    Vodafone Data Plan Update:

Ok the BB tariff just won't do it, it appears. I put the BB plan on my account this morning and quickly found out that it doesn't cover GPRS data....it goes through a different APN and don't play nice with normal GPRS data access.

So before i got off the phone, i got them to leave the standard data access on too. Well they messed up and turned that off, leaving only BB access. NOT HAPPY!! I had to ring them back to turn it back on but i managed to wrangle a better plan out of them - so it looks like i'm on 50mb data for 20euro. This as opposed to the best consumer plan of 25mb for 15euro.

Check out what your BB plan covers!!!! If it doesn't cover normal GRPS/EDGE (o2) data, then I rekon you'll have to ditch the BB plan and get a data plan on your account.

Haven't had a chance to work on the number recognition issue - will get there!

I hate contacting O2 about BB and data plan issues. Nobody has a clue what I'm talking about!
My contract runs out next month, and I'm going to have to seriously consider my options.
Part of this involves seeing if the iPhone lies in my future! :)
    Should be getting it tomorrow.

The BB+Touch plan is looking more and more appealing! God I hate stupid hassle. Oh for a simple life.

Uhhmmmm hate to be putting a downer on this but advertising items for sale is not supposed to be allowed so *smack* down with that sort of thing!!

    Hey,

I got one one too. So far, i am impressed-ish. Not having any luck connecting to WIFI though... :(

I keep getting an annoying message saying that I an not subscribed to EDGE. Anyone any ideas what this means? Do I have to be with O2?

    Thanks...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,985 ✭✭✭big_moe

    yeah o2 only support edge.

the iphone tries to connect to a wifi network first, then edge, the just bog standard phone interweb. whenever i get home, it picks my wifi network straight away.... didnt need to set anything up, other than input my WEP key...

i got mine 2 weeks ago and love. all unlocked. a few things annoy me about it... like not being able to send the same text to a number of people at the same time ( for organising stuff etc..) and no video or MMS is maaaaad annoying...

but all the other stuff it does makes me forget about those few annoyances!
