Hi, how come whenever something bad happens north of the river in dublin, the press are saying "occured in Ballybough in North Dublin..." while if something happens in Tallaght or Dolphin's Barn type places they just state the exact place name, never "...occured in Kilmainham South Dublin"

This isn't a North-South Dublin rant, i'm curious at the press for this pattern, please no pig head replies "Well more crime occurs in North Dublin so...." blah blah blah please read the above places i named above that are south of the river...

It just agrovates me is all

to be honest I couldn't place ballybough on a map, so telling me it is north Dublin is mildly useful. If they said somewhere like cherrywood or loughlinstown, I bet they would add South Dublin after it. I think there maybe sample error on your part, but who knows.

I noticed some parts of Tallaght being called West Dublin now too.

Yes I have noticed this trend and other people have mentioned it to me before.

Well as most of the Dub meeeeja lives in the leafy south-east the distinction is understandable. ;)

Could be worse you could be in Limerick which if you only ever knew it from the news would be thought of as a sort of misty Bronx.

    Is that true?

I don't think it is at all.

Can you name one prominent columnist--you know the type: regular piece that is supposed to inform opinion, usually a licence for a rant every week (or day) depending on the frequency they get--who comes from or lives in South East Dublin?

I would be very interested to know.

Most of the "Thought leaders" are blow ins from benighted parts of hte country like Cork, Roscommon and Limerick and have a massive chip on their shoulders about dublin (esp South Dublin) and its people.

makes ya wonder if they'd get miffed if we start describing ranelagh and rathgar as "east dublin" :D

its just another class based thing the media have latched onto lately in their usual patronising way . ive lived in tallaght my entire life and apparently theres a whole area called west tallaght thats popped up in the last few years without me noticing. makes me wonder who nicked saggart :D
