emergency tax

ok first things first, i've been through the emergency tax rig-marole before (as i'm sure we all have) and that's grand and dandy.. except this time is different.

i left xtra-vision on august 5th (that was my last shift after the two weeks notice) and 2 weeks later i joined a new company in which i get paid monthly. i waited around for xtra-vision to give me my p45 and holiday pay, and on the final week of august i rang on a daily basis to find out what was going on. i rang the store i worked in and they called head office, to which they never got a response.

i got paid and thought i got away without being taxed (not used to being paid monthly so i thought i got a lovely lump sum), but i just quickly did some math and i've been raped by the tax man... which is fine and expected. but over a month later i can't do anything about it because xtra-vision never gave me a p45, or gave me my feckin' holiday money.

    what can i do here?
    cheers...

Ring the Revenue, explain your story and ask for a tax cert to give to your new employers. They'll probably have a bit of a word with Xtravision about withholding P45s

Im similar, left my last job well over 6 weeks ago and despite asking them nearly every day, they STILL havent given me my P45. Ive since been paid by my new job and got taxed 42% because of this.

Could I just give my new employers my P60 instead?

Lads, ladies, the way is simple. First you ask your employer for their tax number, so that you can sort out your tax. Employers will give this, as it's often asked for. Then you ring up the Tax office for your county, and tell them your PPS numer, your new employer number, say that that's your new job, and it's sorted. I've done this twice so far, and it worked.

Completely agree with Syco. Get onto Revenue sooner rather than later because your tax bill for the 2nd month will be much higher and then from the third month onwards you will be paying 41% of everything.

You probably better going onto a Week 1 basis as you do not have a P45 from the last employer. You will pay tax, but better doing that now than facing a bigger bill further down the road after P45 is issued.

Revenue MAY already have P45 info as most companies now file via ROS.

    Call Revenue.

Revenue do NOT like it when previous employers withhold P45s. So get in touch with them and they will help sort you out. They're very good to deal with generally.
