stumbled across this cultural event tonight -- Temple Bar was packed , and great weather .. managed to get to the Colman Doyle exhibition , which i loved - and am deffo going back to it when less crowded -- blew me away -- one thing i took away, was how powerfull some of his child images were , something unfortunatly that seams impossible these days , without images getting misinterpreted by a tiny minority -- anyway as always my best images were in the most unusual places ;-

    goreat shots there!!
yeah i'd agree regarding children shots - and some of the constraints are a bit ott, i've taken lots and lots of child shots in appropriate settings and mostly it's ok.
but like if the predators want pics they aint looking in flickr for them - they can go out with their dirty macks and a video cam or use one of those small spy cams and do a much better job of stalking.
Sometimes PC can go too far - recently my sis was prevented in the local swimming pool of taking photos of her kids splashing about - it's ridiculous

i guess when you've no ill intent, any restriction appears ridicolous.

the subject of photographing children was covered recently on the tubridy show and the cultural impact. the case that kicked it off was of an individual of asian origin but living in an area for a period, who kinda of just walked up and began taking pictures of another individuals child/children - pretty blatently too. the father freaked and harsh words took place. apparently the guy just found the child/children *interesting* but culturally there was nothing *wrong* as such or at least from where he came from. so was his mistake/crime/offence not to seek permission from the father or should it be a free for all - after all from my recollection of the story this was in a public place. we don't know whether the guy had or hadn't ill intent on his mind but it certainly freaked out the dad.

by the way - great shots barry.

from previous threads, you spoke about how you have taken time to interact, and build a 'relationship of kind' with the liffey crew and it seems to have paid you back in spades. but would it have worked if you had just assumed it was a public place and you had the right to/could. maybe this is the line somewhat more accented when it comes to photographing children that anyone intending to photograph in the vacinity of kids must walk.

    and so.... society advances eh?

i have 2 kids myself , and am aware of potential issues , but my problem is do i take photos of kids by asking them , or should i ask there parents as well , legally i don't have to ... anyway took some photos of some kids , and am going to be talking to there school about photography , and teach them (or try to ;) ) of the benefits of photography ... some of Doyles and Bourkes finest photographs included children , in completly innocent poses , which i wish and would try to replicate ... and help children see the benefits of photography , rather than a growing fear that all photographers are perverts !!
