A friend of mine will be working in Ireland for the next 6 to 12 months. He is english and has a UK registered car. He will be staying in a hotel in Dublin from Monday to Friday and flying home at the weekends.

He wants to bring his car over to Dublin and keep it at the hotel during the week, and leave it at my house at the weekends. Is there any legal issue with me driving the car at weekends?

You can't drive it. A Irish resident may not drive a vehicle in Ireland that has not had VRT paid on it (or otherwise been legally registered in the state).

    http://www.revenue.ie/index.htm?/leaflets/vrt2.htm

"The vehicle may not in any circumstances be driven by a State resident."

It's illegal for an RoI resident to drive a private vehicle in this country on which VRT has not been paid.

If you disagree, go tell Revenue that their website is wrong. :)

Had this confirmed about a year ago by a Garda. My cousin was over from Scotland with his car, and had to fly back a couple of days later when his wife became ill.
I was due to go to scotland a couple weeks after this, so the plan was I would bring the car back through Larne. Decided to check with local Garda to double check if it was ok for me to drive it, and as I say, he confirmed the above. My cousin had to fly back himself to collect it.
I was a bit miffed about it at the time, given the circumstances, but I guess that if they allowed for "circumstances", everybody would be using similar excuses.

Just look at all the Derry registered cars in driveways in places like Buncrana.

So how is someone deemed a legal resident of Ireland?
Is there a time limit you can stay in Eire before you have to register it?
