    Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone can tell me if this setup is possible. I just bought an external hard disk (usb 2.0). I have a usb to ethernet converter. Could I connect the converter to a switch thats connected to my Wireless AP and access the hard disk remotely?

    Thanks for any replies.......

I'm going to say no. The hard disk wouldn't be able to use the usb->ethernet device even though technically you could join all the devices because the physical interfaces might connect.

I'm sure there's more products out there but I'm so far only aware of the Apple wireless base station doing what you are asking for,

don't think so, you will either need a PC to access the drive remotely through it, or alternatively a NAS external drive, check the manual for the ext drive, if it mentions NAS you may be in business, although these are much more expensive than regular ext drives...

Here's a NAS box for USB 2.0 external drives:

I think there's a linksys wireless router that allows you to connect a USB hard-drive to it.

What the OP is trying to do will not work. If the drive is brand new maybe you could exchange it for an NAS external drive. Just say you bought the wrong item ;)

I'd recommend this also. You can connect two USB 2.0 drives to it or one drive and a USB key and access it over the network or Internet, should you choose.

I have one of those and it has was resigned to its box after I discovered these in Maplins: http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=97390&source=1&C=Maplin&U=HomeBasketFillers&T=97390&DOY=3m9.

You should be able to pick one up for around e60 and they are far superior to the Linksys box on so many levels its not funny. But they don't take external USB drives, the drive goes inside the case (obviously!).
