    Hi all,

I am thinking of doing one of the photography evening courses in WIT. You know, just as a hobby kind of thing. Anyone ever do one before; did you find it good, bad, worth doing? There is an open night tonight I will be going to; still it would be no harm in knowing what someone who when through it thought.

I did the introduction to photography one a few years ago. I enjoyed it but most of the class were women who wanted to meet new people, and chat and go out after for booze. Which is fine but i was there to learn about cameras and stuff!

its worth doing for the cost of it.

    Do it.

I'm considering the City & Guilds there, so going along to the open evening as well. I was asking one of the guys in the camera club about it at the weekend, and he said there were a few people in the club had done it over the years, that it was tough enough, but they reckoned it was good. I've no idea what the introduction to photography courses are like, but I'd say they're fairly basic from the looks of it

I remember looking at an exhibition of theirs in the library on Lady Lane once. Wasn’t bad.

There is indeed. First meeting after the summer break is on tonight in Mount Sion (just off Barrack St.) at 8pm. The meetings are on Monday nights, generally every 2 weeks, unless there's a bank holiday. The policy for newcomers is that they're welcome to drop along for a couple of weeks to see if they fancy it, so all are welcome. If you can't make it tonight (bit short notice at this stage), there's usually a bit in the Munster Express at the weekend as well, with what's coming up.

hmm doubt I can manage tonight, but wouldn't mind coming along for one evening anyway to see what its like, many in it?

It was busy enough before the summer, all sorts of levels. I'd point you at the website, but it hasn't been updated in a while, so it's best to come along and see for yourself. If you can't make tonight, the next meeting is on the 17th, and the one after is the 1st

I went out to the open evening to find out about doing Level 3 of the City & Guilds to find out that you don't learn Darkroom techniques or even use the darkroom anymore. I was astonded shocked that they don't cover it any more in the city & Guilds. Why would you do a C&G's course and not want to learn about the darkroom, even if it's a basic knowledge of what happens. Damn the digital age.

which reminds me must do a wee bit of research into buying a half secent digital 35mm camera.

    Bring back film

I went out to ask about level 2, and he said they'd abandoned the B&W processing module in favour of digital as people were spending far too much time last year to complete the module and just didn't seem to be getting a handle on it. It's a pity I think, I was kind of looking forward to getting my hands on some chemicals for a change!

Are they running level 3? I thought they'd dropped that completely due to lack of takeup

Gareth said they might run it if there's enough. But when I went to register I was told they weren't running it. They may offer it in January. I may have to redo level 2 as when I did it the first time round there was 5 modules and I only did 3. C&G have changed Level 2 back to 3 modules so I'll have to get in touch with C&G to see if I even qualify for Level 3.

Anyhow using chemical's for B&W isn't rocket science it's all about the temperature. and there's absolutly nothing like bringing you photograph to the tanks and watching the magic of your picture coming to life on the page in front of you. Although the red light can be a bit disorentating when you first experience it, But that's part of the magic.

Edit: They don't do any still life and they don't even use the medium format cameras anymore.

Anybody get talking to the digital photography man, I tried twice and he still was not there, up to about 7:30 anyway. I was hoping to talk to him and Introduction to photography and choose from one.
