Macbook wont turn on...

Last night was just chatting with mates on the net, listening to music, regular things. My macbook froze, waited for 5 minutes and it wouldnt turn on, so i restarted it. Ive done this before, never had any problems. Except this time.

The apple icon appeared, it made no noise, then the little loading screen appeared with a blue background. It then went to just a plain blue background.

Ive tried letting the battery deplete then restart it, take out the battery then restart it. same thing happens all the time. Im pretty stumped to be honest.

Ive checked the apple docs on what to do, even did a PMU Reset and still nothing :(

Any help would be greatly appreciated

    edit:
i put in the install cd, ran the disk utility, the smart status on the HD has failed, a lovely message has just appeared also
"This drive has reported a fatal hardware error to Disk Utility.
If the drive has not failed completely, back up as much data as you can and then replace it with a working drive"

luckily i backed up my music and pictures the other day so i wont miss much but is there any chance of being able to repair the HD, it wont let me do it using disk utility. My macbook is just 14months, so 2 months over the warranty :(
    anything i can do?

Jeeze that's tough. I've been hearing recently of a few MacBook drives failing.

You could probably have the data retrieved at enormous expense, but in reality there's no point in having it repaired, it'll just fail again. You're better off with a new drive

Buy a new (bigger) drive, and buy en external drive for daily incremental backups. You can look in online stores like Komplett.ie or elsewhere. Just make sure that you get a drive of the right physical size. The replacement process is reasonably easy.

    Good luck,

    Hugh

Really sorry to read that, and its really discouraging.

All I would say, and its little consolation at this point, but you get dodgy PCs too you know! You are going to get some units that are just duds regardless of the manufacturer, its bad luck and very off putting but I would hate to think you would be put off on a perm basis, esp if you enjoy the user experience. :(

Sorry to hear its been a bad intro to Macs. Best of luck getting it sorted

my advice would be to put in a new HD and reinstall os x -easy enough to do- then put the old HD in a sata caddy and try to recover data that way - i would be very surprised if all data was unrecoverable

you know, i really wouldn't let a failed HD put you off any computer manufacturer. Of all the components in the machine, the HD is the one with the least input from Cupertino and the one with the greatest chance of failure. Its the fact that they are spinning platters that lends to the relatively high failure rate of HD's.

As the guys and gal have suggested, just lob in a bigger HD and get yourself going and blame it on seagate or samsung or whoever's HD is in your machine, rather than blame it on Apple.

better be!! :D (Fusion or Parallels are accepted too of course)

Course, what I really mean is that you are free to use any application or OS you like. You can be crazy if you like! ;) hehe

Work PCs actually -- I'm forced to due to the nature of what I'm doing (computer games localisation, FYI) :(

OTOH, I can't think of any MS Paint-alike apps for OSX...
