computer doesn't recognise bluetooth USB

I've a windows Vista with AMD ATHLON dual core 5600+,1gig of ram, dell inspiron 1531.

I just bought a bluetooth USB adaptor so I could put my photos from my phone onto my pc,freeing up space.I bought a Micradigital Bluetooth 10m V2.0+EDR Adapter from argos as it claims to be able to send photos from mobiles to computers, however, when I installed the USB adaptor and tried to transfer files,I was told I needed a passcode.I used windows help and support to try and find a solution but I was told that I would automatically get one when Windows added a bluetooth device. When I tried to ad it,I was told that the computer doesn;t recognise any bluetooth devices as being added.

I still have the bluetooth in the status bar but whenever I try and add anything,I'm told to have a passcode.Windows wont let me add a device either.

Is there any way to rectify this?

    Bluetooth works by pairing devices.

Your mobile and your PC need to setup a trust relationship between them.

So use your mobile phone to scan for bluetooth devices and see if your PC shows up. If it does select it and try to 'pair' with it. It'll ask you to enter a passcode. Your PC will then tell you that a device want to pair with the computer and asks you to enter the passcode if you agree to the pairing.

If your PC doesn't show up then do it the other way around. Get your PC to scan for devices while bluetooth is enabled on your phone. If it shows up. Right-click on it and select 'pair with device' or similar. Again you'll be asked to enter a passcode and then your mobile will prompt you asking if you want to pair with the computer and to enter the passcode if you agree.

The benefit of all this is that you only need to set this up once and from then on they'll know about each other and you can send files both ways as you wish.

I'm unable to do that. My computer recognises my phone but won't tell me how to fix it up, it will tell me to type in a passcode but when I do, it says pairing failed on my phone.

If I try the reverse, the same problem occurs.I scan for a device,my pc is recognised but when i try to pair it and type in a passcode,it says pairing failed and the following appears on my pc:

    Pairing failed
Error in pairing with the device:'Cian'.

Make sure that device is connectable and try again.
    OK

You have to be reasonably quick by the way. From the moment you type the passcode the other device only has a few seconds to respond. Failure to type the passcode on the other device in time will get you a 'pairing failed' message.

The best I could do quickly was find this, http://www.amset.info/windowsmobile/bluetooth1.asp

It shows how to pair a mobile device to a windows machine. The mobile device is running windows mobile but the steps are the same and the windows screenshots should be good to point you in the right direction.

Also what's the make and model of phone? In case it doesn't work for you still.

tbh i find that if you can get a cable for the phone it'll work better i.e. more types of files can be transfered and much easier

Check you phone manual, to see where the passcode is set. The passcode is there to stop just anyone accessing your phone when the bluetooth is on.

    sorted,thanks a million folks.

Yeah, a cable wouldn've probably been easier but it's a lot more expensive.
