Hey just got a dell inspiron 6400 few weeks ago. Turned it on today and it was very slow. Even typing words into MS word was slow. Checked my antivirus which said i wasnt protected as have not registered yet but scanned and no virus.

The internet explorer opens but wont respond and then without me doing anything a couple of more internet explorer windows open for no reason.

Help me fix this as its driving me crazy

What anti virus are you using? Do you have any anti spyware or anti adware software installed? If so do a scan...

CLICK HERE to download the HijackThis Installer:
    1. Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
    2. Double-click on HJTInstall.exe to run the program.
    3. By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.
    4. Accept the license agreement by clicking the "I Accept" button.
    5. Click on the "Do a system scan and save a log file" button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
    6. Click "Save log" to save the log file and then the log will open in Notepad.
    7. Click on "Edit -> Select All" then click on "Edit -> Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
    8. Come back here to this thread and paste the log in your next reply.
    9. Do NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet! Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

I cant download anything cant even get on the net with the laptop. Left the laptop for a half hour to see if internet explorer would respond and it didn't. Gonna save it to USB now and put it on the laptop.

    Be back in few mins

Also try booting in safe mode.

It loads a lot less drivers etc. So you may find the thing that's slowing you down won't start in safe mode.

Safe mode is normally entered by hitting F8 just before the windows logo shows up at startup.

Nothing stands out to me. Other then McAfee runs alot of processes so thank god I don't use it anymore.

As for your problem, Get this onto your machine and run it, http://www.safer-networking.org/

Spybot - Search & destroy has a good rep for finding and fixing problems. Stops that whole having to read your process list and registry entires etc. More of a point and click fix of the computer.

It isn't a malware problem anyway, your log is clean. I see no conflicts that might explain why your PC is slow.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,502 ✭✭✭chris85

Ok ran a scan with Mcafee and nothing found. The performance is better now. Word is able to keep up with me when typing but still cant get internet explorer to respond at all.

May try that other download to see if it can find anything. DO you think McAfee is cause??? May get rid of it and put AVG on it.

While I don't like McAfee I'd never blame it for the amount of slow down you were describing.

My personal favorite free antivirus is avast. I keep it on even while gaming cause I don't notice any slow down at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,502 ✭✭✭chris85

letting windows run a diagnostic on it. Its 60& through and nothing found. Its on its second pass thorugh so doubt it will find anything.

Could it be my connection just cause it only internet explorer being affected. Although I am on the same connection at moment as have wireless through the house and I am posting from the desktop which is also wirelessly connected.

    Its really annoying me now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,502 ✭✭✭chris85

internet explorer is more or less responding now. But there is a big lag in it. Wont keep up with my typing at all.

Noticed that ram is running permanently at bout 600-700 MB ( of 1024 MB) Is this normal?

Sorry if seem clueless bout some things like this know a bit bout computers but no expert!

What does it say it's doing in the status bar?

If it's only IE do you have another browser installed? If so use it and tell us if it's slow too.

If all browsers are slow and they hang on the "looking up www.whatever.com" then you might have a badly configured dns server entry for your network interface.

Try Firefox or Opera and see if they are slow. It's always a good idea to have more then one browser available to you anyway.

I would. I've come across a couple of cases where McAfee (especially on Dells) causes the machine to go down to a crawl. It has a bad habit of trying to download new virus definitions on boot and refusing to let windows to continue to load until it has them. Of course, not everyone is connected to the net all the time, so it just sits there waiting for its time out before it finishes booting. Its incredibly annoying, so I just remove it and give them something else instead.

OP: This sounds like a problem a lot of Dell machines suffer from for some reason. Try this: Right click on my computer -> click properties - > hardware tab - > device manager. Expand the "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers" icon. You'll to check both the primary and secondary IDE channels, just incase. Double click on the primary. The "current transfer mode" should be "Ultra DMA mode 5" not PIO mode. If its PIO mode, then you might suffer from the problems you're describing. To correct it, go back to Device Manager and right click on the primary IDE channel, select uninstall. Then reboot. When you boot up again, it will automatically reinstall the channel. Repeat this for the secondary channel too. I've found this on several Dell machines, including my own at one point. I don't know what makes it change to PIO mode.....Hope this helps

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,502 ✭✭✭chris85

Both primary and secondary are in "Ultra DMA mode 5". Ive been trying to figure out the problem and the only thing is that all the other programs on the computer are responding well. Its just the internet explorer, but funny enough if i right click on internet explorer and run it as an administrator it will run perfect with no lag.

Is there some setting that could be different between running as an administrator and as normal.

When running explorer as administrator it uses up about 1% on the processes manager in task manager. But running as normal brings it up to about 50%.

    Any ideas???

    You running IE7 or 6 SP2?

Try running IE with no addons enabled. This option is in the Accessories->System Tools menu.

If it works well running as your user with addons disabled you should see what addons you've got installed. I don't know of any exploits in the form of IE addons but there could be a bad one in there all the same.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,502 ✭✭✭chris85

Think running IE7, just got it new with vista so presume comes with the latest explorer. I'll Try that and see how i get on
