    Hi all,
Quick question. A friend of mine needs to purchase a Mac Pro, and has to pay by company cheque. Ideally he'll be customising it a little (mainly just adding ram).

What stores will do this? Is Spectra Photo the best bet?

Why not call the Apple shop in Cork? Thety are very helpful and SOMETIMES give you a deal if you call them. Memory and monitor are cheaper from third party.

You can buy from the Apple Store online and pay by cheque. The'll release the goods once the cheque has been cleared and/or received. Slows the process a small bit though.

    Cheers,
    Peter

Weird I posted a reply yesterday, and it seems to have disappeared. Probably off to watch the All Ireland or something.

Anyways, Thank you all for your advice. We've contacted Mactivate, they said they can sort us out. We'll be buying through crucial (what a saving that is!).

On the Crucial RAM thing, I presume since this is a server/desktop machine that we can open it up and pop in RAM without risking any warranty nonsense yeah?

just make sure you put the ram in the right place when you get it as it has to go in matched pairs. there are 2 ram trays to give them a name and the preinstalled ram will be on the top tray in the rear 2 slots, the next ram you install should go in the bottom tray in the rear 2 slots and should you have more ram again back up to the two remaining slots on the top tray and then the bottom tray if you are really lucky.

By co-incidence, my brother's business is also buying a Mac Pro for his office, and has a RAM query:

We understand that the RAM has to be installed in pairs as mentioned above, but can the sets of pairs be different, ie: the Mac Pro is coming with 2 x 512MB in slots 1 & 2, will it be ok to add 2 x 1GB in slots 3 & 4, for a total of 3GB?

    Further queries:

Would it be ok if the different sets were slightly different speeds? (Is "PC-2 6400" from Crucial the same as "667MHz DDR2" from Apple, and would two pairs at these different speeds cause trouble?)

Would it be ok to mix unbuffered and buffered RAM? (while keeping to pairs and speed requirements)

Go to crucial.com and put in your machine config. it will tell you exactly what you can and can't use.

I did, and it recommends buffered PC-2 6400, but I don't know whether this is the same as 667MHz DDR2 from Apple, and if they are different, are they compatible enough to use in the same machine?

Also the buffered memory is over €400 for 2GB, so I'm wondering if unbuffered would work, as the Mac will not be particularly mission-critical?

Yep to do that is fine the only requirement is that the pairs are matched i.e. 2x 512 not 1 x 512 & 1 x 1g
