Madrid operates about 250 urban buses on biogas extracted from organic waste and waste water treatment facilities. Some 34 bn litres of biogas are produced annually. Similar systems are operating in Prague and Lille.

A diesel taxi produces about 21 tonnes of CO2 per annum (based on 110,000 km travelled). Fuelled by biogas it would generate about 220 kg of CO2 – ie about 1% of CO2 generated by the diesel version. CO, NOX, SO2 and PM10 pollution is also far lower from the biogas vehicle.
