Chamonix. Beautiful. More slopes than you could ski in a year .... big town with plenty of bars and restaurants. Can't beat it.

this is probs too late but for future viewer, dont go near chamonix/val d'isere/tignes or any of the well known places unless you have the money to spend....id advise go to sainte-foy. perfect for learner skiers/boarders, beautiful resort very quiet, loads of off piste-infact most of the resort is!....iv experienced that french people are ignorant so just beware of being treated badly!!

san valentino in italy is quite nice aswell, cheap enough....but in general ski resorts are expensive!!

    highly reccommend sainte-foy!

I would recommend 3 vallee over Chamonix, better lift system - or so I hear.

You can get to Val Thorens for fairly cheap if you go solo. PM me for details, I did it this year and it worked out perfectly!
