you could argue that we are looking at the best looking 18 to 22 year olds in Israel, as they all do national service.

I'm sure we have better looking lassies than the Israelis.

Who cares how they look if they are good soldiers.

As an aside, what is it with Irish soldiers and uniforms, not just soldiers the Irish in general. We just don't seem to get it right. We always somehow manage to look scruffy. We should copy the French or the Italians or Spanish. They really know how to wear a uniform.

Btw not all Israeli's are obliged to serve. The religious one's don't have to serve, and there's other exemptions too.

are women allowed to become hersidic (sp?) jews, I thought they were the only ones that were exempt from national service. That is a huge bone of contention in Israel as the strict jewish community make up about 5% pof the population and yet account for about 50% of the vote in the Kinnesit (sp?). They are the ones who are all for invading their neighbours and creating settlments, yet don't do any of the fighting.

I'd have to ring some friends in the IDF to get all the details.

But there are more exemptions from service for females than males.

For instance after national service reserve service is optional for females and obligatory for males.

As regards the settler's, yes I know :mad: most of my friends in the IDF detest them and their attitudes.

Women do a shorter spell of national service as well. I got to know a couple of Israeli girls taking some time off in Londonafter their national service. I wish they brought their uniform with them:mad:
