I was going to stick this under the 'freebies's thread but decided to post it here. Link here. A vidya game for ye hip kids. :)
EA is offering Westwood Studios' seminal RTS Command & Conquer Gold as a free download starting today on the Command & Conquer website. The full game download, commemorating the August 31 release of the game 12 years ago, comprises two ISO image files and is also hosted on FileShack for your downloading pleasure.

This version of Command & Conquer Gold is Windows XP compatible and identical to the version included in the compilation Command & Conquer: The First Decade.

Bleh 24K/sec download from their site... servers probably getting hammered at the moment.
Can't be arsed with 7 hour ETA.
Good find though... might try it again in a few days.

Excellent game. It even works via LAN in the Gold edition, so you can play multiplayer with some friends - still fantastic after all these years.

Forget about downloading it from EA, you'll get about 10kb/sec. Use the fileshack links from the shacknews post. At this time of day the wait is less than a minute and the first ISO downloaded at my connection's max speed all the way (2Mbit) from their new york mirror.

Red Alert works in LAN with XP already. There's fixes available.

I have Vista. M$ have chosen not to enable IPX in vista. I dont want to go tunnelling ipx over tcp/ip either. Is there an official tcp/ip patch?

No need for CDs brian, you could use something like Daemon Tools to mount it as a virtual CDROM drive.

Given that this is 12 years old- your ATI card may not be a limiting factor!

Nice find Ruu- keep up the good work.

Yep it'll work fine on your poxy ATI rage :D There is no 3D acceleration required - this game is all 2D.

Ok, I'll have to try later for the other one.

Are those single command missions in these?

I like the new game, (demo at least) very like the originals I'll pick it up when it drops from the "more money than sense" price bracket.
