Problem: PC won't boot.

My neighbour asked me to have a look at his PC today. He said it wouldn't start. Basically, he was right, it won't boot up. The screen just gives the options of starting up normally, in safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt etc. I tried the safe mode option and the windows xp start up screen appears for about 10 seconds followed by a flash of a blue screen (too fast to read) and then back to the start up options again. It's a Philips Iqon which I think I read here previously are not that great?

Has anyone any ideas how I can get things back to normal for him and what might have caused this. I'm not sure if it's relevant, but to me, the hard drive sounded louder than it should have. I asked him if he can find the bootable disc he got with the PC and he's looking for that now. Any suggestions appreciated with this.

tbh at this stage I would go straight for the recovery console or the repair installation, if I could be bothered... really though I'd go for a reinstall after getting my files out with a LiveCD of some kind. Windows is never the same again after it gets like this. You might try reseating everything anyway, and also put your finger on some of the main heatsink if you have an antistatic band.

Look through the BIOS, and there should be an automatic restart option if it crashes. Turn that off, so that you can read the blue screen. Then google the line of english.

Windows is corrupt, you could do a repair install. BUT you will lose alot of data. As said above, use a live ( konppix ) linux cd to recover the important stuff. Then reinstall windows.

Its the only way forward im afraid.
