I'm old enough to remember a lot of what they show. (ahem ! more than 40)
    Seriously nostalgic.
    Absolutely love this programme.

    Well done RTE !

Brilliant programme. Very well edited and put together. Pity you can't buy it on dvd.

I have no idea why...but i love this show. Very clever editing and music. They could do with updating it.
Does the series still end in 1999?

    really enjoyable program.

Sometimes the musical juxtopositions are a bit comical.Setting images of Jack Lynch in black and white to funky motown tunes seems wrong.

everyone I know who has watched this loves it...very good, they haven't done the noughties yet have they?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,301 ✭✭✭Snickers Man

    Great programme.

The format is a total rip off from a BBC series called The Rock & Roll years which began in 1955 (or 1956-whenever R&R is deemed to have started) and only progressed as far as 1979. For some reason they never updated it beyond then.

Maybe they decided Thatcher coming to power was the end of Rock & Roll as we knew it.

It's amazing that so much time has passed in making new decades and showing repeats that we're only two years away from the noughties! No doubt it will be comissioned.

It never fails to impress just how consistent the editing of this series has been over four decades of material - partly due to the eagle eye of producer John O'Regan. The series always manages to incite emotion, humour, anger and incredulity, largely due to the most simple of edits and meticulous approach to detail.

One of the best series RTÉ has ever made, and confirms the cliche that the simplest ideas are often the best. My favourite decade is definitely the 1980s :)

It is an excellent show, saw the 82 one a while ago. Very simple idea for a show as mentioned and works very well. Pity we'll never see it on DVD (or very unlikely).

    best show ever

The reason why we won't see a DVD. Such a pity, never tire of watching it.

If it's after 1980 then I always watch it - definitely a great show

Yeah, such a great show. Love it.

Great show alright. I must set it on auto-record, I'm usually on the way home when it's on.

Love this programme. Watching it over and over since the start.. to the extent that I am convinced I remember the JFK assassination - despite the fact that I was not born till 1967!!

    Totally engaging TV.

This evening showed Cosgrave/Taoiseach saying that blow-ins should blow out or blow up never mind the fact that some of them are not even Irish !

Topical at the time without doubt. You couldn't dare say that now without being leapt on from a height by every PC twit and agency in the State. Shows how times have changed. :):)

Love this show, especially when my Grandad pops up in 1974 with his crazy hair.....

Yeah I love this show too. Roll on 2010, when we get to see the noughties!

I have them all on VHS and am toying with the idea of mpeg'ing them putting them up on Youtube some day. Would it really be worth the bother tho? Is anyone interested in watching them and more importantly would RTE just pull them down if I put them up?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 19,986 ✭✭✭✭mikemac

Well just about every poster here would be grateful if you put them on youtube.
    Good karma for you. :)
And before someone says it's illegal bla bla, well noone is losing money as RTE won't be losing any DVD sales

But you're right-if RTE found out they'd be pulled out of the site.

Maybe try one episode and see how it goes

I think The Rock & Roll Years progressed to 1989 not 79. I have some of the eighties years on tape.

It's a tune by Steely Dan from 1972. The guitar solo is done by Elliott Randall

But why oh why don't they subtitle it with aertel??????

Probably because coloured subtitles on a black background would block out the captions and placing them above the captions would block most of the picture.

    Thanks for all the replies.
I was worried that somehow I was the only person in Ireland who thought that this was the best show on TV ever.

    I say it again.

    WELL DONE RTE

why a not a reeling in the years marathon and stick then all on for one 24hr period.

not sure how many there is. it would be class.

It's a great show and very well done but.... RTÉ has been repeating nearly everyweek since 2000. They have well and truly milked it at this stage.

Agree with the above poster, it will be nice to see some new ones in 2010.

Well done RTE on Reeling in the Years. Great show. Never tire of watching it. Its a shame it is not on DVD

Some of the comments here you swear people never saw tv in their lives. It just edited news clips with a musical soundtrack. Its not Emmy or BAFTA territory. Its interesting but after watching 1970 with Dana winning the Eurovision for the 10th time, it gets boring.

And clearly a lot of people think that edited news clips with a musical soundtrack makes for good TV. Just because it's not BAFTA or EMMY territory, doesn't mean it isn't entertaining..

so you think little of it but have watched the same episode 10 times?

One of my favourite bits for reasons I can't really explain is when RTÉ interview a farmer from ballygobackwards about emigrants from Ireland, and he mentions how if people were coming to Ireland instead of the other way around it'd only be right to be friendly and respectful to them. It's at the very very end of one of the episodes (clip was in B&W) and just made me smile at the time.
